Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

early up and out - missed Kelli at the gym, darn spring break! :)

8:41; 8:34 (had to get off to grab a spin pass)

one on the track - sub 8mm, but I didn't see the seconds so I don't know how 'sub'

8:27, then progressive every quarter mile for the last one and every .05 the last quarter of that mile. I think the AP was around an 8:10. Finished the last .05 at 10.1mph - I like that pace, but couldn't do it much longer than that! :)

Spin class - I liked her routine this morning. Good sweaty times.

Home and got ready and off to the dentist for early morning appointments. Cavity free check-up for all of us. Then I picked up 'work' and I'll have him until 4PM tonight. I think we're going swimming (fun) this afternoon though.

***Oh, I'm putting a plea out there. I need some help on workouts. Someone? Anyone? I won a free entry for the SLC half on 4/21 and so I want to race it as a test run for Ogden. But, I need to get some 'workouts' in and not just these normal ol' runs I've been doing. Any suggestions? I'd like a PR and I think with how things have been going I'd probably earn one if I worked for it the right way. I'm really feeling lost. Feel free to message me as well if you don't want to put it all out there on the comments.***

Well the race is 3 weeks away, so you only really have 2 weeks for workouts... so maybe 4 harder workouts?

Are you going to run SLC 1/2 as "race" race, or try to hit goal marathon pace for Ogden? That might be one way to approach it.

But in the meantime, I think the best thing you can do to prep for the 1/2 is a couple tempo runs where you are hitting half-marathon pace for 3-5 miles. They might feel hard, but that's ok - you want to get that "shock" feeling out of the way in training, not during the race! You could also break them up - 3-4 x 1 mile w/ a couple minutes in-between... 2-3 x 1.5 miles... anyway you want to break it up is fine. But definitely try to hit your pace for the SLC race a few times in the next 2 weeks... even if its just for short durations.

Great morning workout Rachel. I don't know how you and Kelli do spin on top of high mileage. You guys rock!

Based on your 10k PR from a few weeks ago you are definitely in shape to PR at Salt lake half. Just follow Jakes advice. :)

Jake, I'd like to race race it. I think I could shoot for a 7:25-7:30AP (1:38ish finish) with Spectrum being a near equivalent (elevation drop) of a predictor. I could use it to hit some MP tempo miles, but I'd rather use it as a race race. Especially being a good downhill course and free :) So, if I did 3 or 4 of the tempo/pace runs when would be a good time to taper - if at all before hand. Could I do a final tempo the Tuesday before then do light Wed, Th, Fr? I'd really like to do this smart.

Rachelle, spin for me is the cardio burn class :) it is where I get to burn off that extra scoop of ice cream. The low impact is really good to help me feel like I'm getting a hard workout in, but taking the pounding off my legs.

Yeah I think for a half-marathon its prefect to do a workout the Tuesday before the race, then take a few easy days. That should have you rested enough. That last workout before the race shouldn't be the hardest one by any means... that's a good time to do something like 3 x Mile w/ a good recovery in between. You just want to get your legs used to moving faster w/out going into "fatigue debt."

okay, now I just have to put my big girl panties on and do some long speed work. Wednesday this week, T and/or Th next week and the next T. I can do this, right?

From Jake K on Mon, Apr 02, 2012 at 16:06:45 from 155.100.226.54

absolutely you can do it! its just takes a little more mental focus to get going w/ it. I even sometimes sit by the door when I'm lacing 'em up in the morning and think "am I really going to be able to run XYZ pace today"?

break up the first one into manageable segments (half-miles?)... and remember than the first couple workouts generally feel like they are impossible and like you'll never be able to race at that pace. BUT, that's the point of training - you stress the body, it responds and adapts, and then you can do it!

Ummmm....I have NO advice, but expect to get a lot of advice from you on our next long run :) I need to do a 20 miler on April 14 - you in?

If you need to, you can pick up additional big girl panties at Dollar Tree. They have a bin full of those.

Thanks Jake! Actually, I CAN! :)

Toby, oh I'm SO in!

Kam, hmmm, maybe I should post a picture - I already have a pair of big girl panties. Treasure mart had a matching his and hers :)
