Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

I look forward to this race every year and this year did NOT disappoint. When we lined up, I knew there would be some tough competition, but I was prepared for a fight. I finally quit smoking so that my lungs didn't hold me back - time to show 'em the guns! I took off like nobody's business and you'd almost say no one knew I was even around. There were a few people ahead of me at the turn around, but I caught Merri and the race was on! Merri and I were neck and neck all the way down the canyon with Lily just ahead. She didn't know how close we were because she was plugged into her ipod. Must have been some really inspirational tunes, she surged and was gone. In the last 100M to the finish I was able to out sprint Merri to the finish and crossed the mat before she did. Lily took home the Rooster, but she better watch out, because next year I'm stealing her playlist!

***okay, so I wasn't 2nd place, but it sure makes for a good story, eh?***

My sister bye-wing wasn't sure last night if she would come or not, but I was happy to see her text that she would meet me and we could carpool down. Even if I was running 10+ min late. She drove, because the plan was for her to run her 10K long run then bike up the canyon. Well, the best laid plans....

Got to the park just in time to say some hellos before we were off. I ran with bye-wing to the 10K turn around, but then she surprised me and said she wanted to do a couple more K...uh huh, the endurance running bug has bit! She made it to Vivian Park (bathrooms and water, good place to turn!) and when she saw she was so close to 5 decided to go to 5 and make it an even 10..MILES! If she was still feeling so good going uphill, I knew she'd be okay going down.  I left her there to finish off my last 1.5 miles until the turn around. It was fun seeing all the other runners as they were heading down. I tried convincing them to do a few more to run with me, but no one bit. dang. Until poor Merri came along. She didn't know what she was in for! :)

I went to the turn around and it was nice to finally be heading down the canyon. It was SO nice to have Merri there. I may have spontaneously combusted if I didn't have someone to whine at on the way back. I was also glad to have someone 'pulling' me down the canyon and keeping my legs moving. Stopped for a GU back at Vivian and a drink at the eternal flow fountain. Merri, thanks again for such a great run and for sticking out the slow slogging miles with me. I should've warned you what a whiner I've been lately before you agreed to run with me. I remember why I love to run now, because I love hanging out with wonderful people like YOU!

About 1.5 from the end bye-wing called and had gotten lost on the way down and missed the turn off. I'm glad she called! So, her 10 miler ended up 10.5 or more. I am SO proud of how well she did. I couldn't have gone from 6 miles to 10!! NO WAY! The first time I ran 10 miles I came home and barfed. I knew that was my limit! But she just carried on and finished it out despite running extra. SO amazing! I love my sisters, they are both a huge inspiration to me. I was pleased with the pace I was able to keep with Merri on the way down, it's been a long time since I've seen that many 8's. Maybe there is something left in this body after all.

When we finished the run we sat around like usual and had a great chatting fest (as my husband would say...a lot of clucking going on). I can't even begin to name all the wonderful people I got to hang with, chat with, stretch with and best part?!? EAT with!!! I had such a wonderful time being with all you amazing ladies! (and Twinkies and Eric :) ).

AP: 9:40 splits: 11:14, 11:40, 11:38, 11:10, 11:17, 9:18, 8:47, 8:27, 8:35, 8:24, 8:26, 8:29, 8:27, 8:42(last .3)

It was great to see and chat with SO many of my favorite runners today. Marion and all others - thank you SO much for the time/effort/money you put into doing this every year. It is the run I look forward to every year and wouldn't miss for the world. THANK YOU for making it wonderful!!!

Now I'm off to a wonderful day hanging out with the family for my oldest son's birthday! The big SEVEN. Man, I'm getting old - maybe I need a cane.

Glad you had a good time (taking second ). You would have still outrun me because I am doing about 12:30 pace right now.

Nice to have a running sister. I had hopes for mine - but unfortunately she decided to gain all her weight back.

Let me know if you want to do JRP or Draper trails one weekend.

From Twinkies on Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 17:56:38 from 67.164.194.215

You are too fast for me. I tried but couldn't catch you. You are definitely improving. Keep it up.

Great job Rachel. I loved reading your report. I'm glad your sister was able to run and go so far. Maybe next year I will do the race.

Carina, you should join us!! You'd love that Rooster :)

Maurine, I'm just happy to see you out and running and enjoying it! I did miss chatting with you today though. I am grateful to have sisters that are good examples.

Twinkies - onward and upward! :) You only couldn't catch me because I had a 3 mile head start! :)

Nancy, it would GREAT to see you there!!

Catherine, you should remind me next year or stay in touch with Marion and she gets the info out.

Burt, what? Mad at me? you must realize I was like the 3rd comment...I got ALL the emails too! You know you can't help it....comment...comment...

Lily, I may try it. Anything is worth a shot at this point! :) Thanks! It was great to see you too.

roosters & clucking like hens? Is this a barnyard run?

Enjoyed your blog & thrilled at the achievements of bye-wing! Nice job grasshopper!!

From bye-wing on Sun, Jul 17, 2011 at 21:54:53 from 12.228.217.58

Not sure how, but reading your blog seems more fun than the run itself.

Thanks for the invite.

Nice run and fantastic report. I think I found a worm hole between Herriman and Provo. I guess I picked a good day to run with Sasha.

From Chad on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 13:56:22 from 168.177.153.27

Congratulations on a fun run. But too much clucking for me.

From Merri on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 18:13:03 from 160.7.252.148

From Merri on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 18:14:30 from 160.7.252.148

NM paragraph 4 is my favorite. ;) I had fun running with you. I was trying to get people to run with me too, but no takers.
