Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

What a great race. I had a wonderful time driving up and bunking with Kelli (and Mmmm, Mmmm, Mmmm and Thanks for dinner!!) AND indulging in the pre-race/post-race ice cream ritual with Kelli and my friend Stephanie - her 1st 1/2!

The morning started out great, but early. I was there to run the race with Steph and keep her going the whole time, we lined up mid-pack and were about 2 min back from the start. The first 6 miles down the canyon she was hitting AWESOME paces and feeling good, but once we hit the flat at the bottom her legs started falling out from under her. It was great to just be going a comfortable pace and just encourage and compliment the crap out of her! At one point we turned a corner (mile 11) and she said "Rach, I've got to walk" I said "Look, the aide station is just up ahead, just make it there and we'll walk through it...you can do it, see the orange jug, just think how much you want it...the faster you get there the sooner you get to walk." She did great and pushed through, we walked a little more that aide station, but then she finished strong! I was so proud of her, I don't remember being as emotional at the finish of my first 1/2 as I was at her's! I would talk about how neat it would be at the finish with her family there...and would tear up, I saw her family and teared up, we crossed the finish and I teared up. What was wrong with me? Still so proud of her! It takes SO much to be able to do it.

Got some rest/stretch/visit time in then at 3 hours headed back to find Amy, I knew she'd be close. I found her about .25 before mile 12. She was walking with her head down "head up and let's go!" I shouted from across the street. She later told me how she'd just puked at mile 11 (due to a coughing fit) and had just finished praying she would just finish...I got to be her angel yesterday. Kelli and I ran her into the finish and I kept her moving the whole time, she said she probably would've walked if I hadn't have been there. She worked so hard and put so much effort into this race, again...I teared up like 3 times that last mile with her! Especially at the finish watching her hubby cheer her in was just AMAZING! She finished in 3:22 and her 12 mile run was 3:20, so she did even held a good pace for her through the race.

To me, THIS is what running is about. Not the medals, prizes, t-shirts or times (although they are ALL good motivators that I love!). The effort and sheer will that you have to have to do it, and all the people that support you and help to push you along your way. You can only ever beat your own time...we can't compete against each other (I understand a race is this, but work with me here for a minute), we can only conquer ourselves. I saw the same exhaustion in Amy's eyes at 3:20 as I did in Kelli's that finished in 1/2 the time. Running is an individual sport, and we all get to encourage each other through the journey! I love it!!! Thanks to all you out there who have helped me get where I am today, you are all MY angels!

This report was a perfect Sunday read. I love your attitude about helping and supporting others, and the joy you have doing it. It is so true that this is so individual and we all can find sucess on our own level. Thanks for the uplifting report!!!! You are great friend to me and many others!

From RAD on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 16:54:34 from 76.27.12.70

Thanks Shelly! I just love that my friends are coming around to this running thing too!

Maurine, it is the BEST to pace someone to their first finish...I'm sure you know!

Allie, I'm glad I got to say hi! I'll race out at the full, but only if I get a good nick-name for doing it...you can spread it around the elites (only so I don't get "that annoying slow runner" tag :) )

Leslie, thanks! It was just a wonderful race, but reading all the 'race' reports, more than anything I'm just glad I didn't have to push it :)

What a great friend you are Rachel. You are an awesome runner and make a great coach for others.

RAD,

What a great friend you are. I would have to agree with you about what running really is. Running is about the enjoyment of accomplishing a goal that you never knew possible. I know that you made the experience a great one for these ladies, like you have made it for me in the past. Sometimes we get caught up in the race of life (me), and we forget to breath and enjoy the ride.

lol. nicknames...so the "gadget girl" moniker is already taken...how about pink flash? speedy pink streak? pink panther? this is all assuming you will be in your RHPC shirt...if not, then it will probably just be "that RAD woman" :)

From DonGardinero on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 17:09:47 from 75.162.162.50

Very nicely done, Rachel. Congrats to Amy, too, for completing her first 1/2. It's always such a good feeling helping someone out when they are struggling. Good job doing that!!! Are you feeling ready for TOU?

From Bec on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 17:22:21 from 67.177.35.60

Allie,

Love RAD's nicknames. She will be running right out in the front of the crowd at TOU marathon, I will make her!

Hey, I TRIED to stay awake. The traffic jam just did me in. Man, was I tired!!!

I so loved running (hobbling and texting) back with you to get Amy! She was so happy to see you and I know it meant the world to see you and have you there. She was looking quite defeated, but your presence changed all of that for her. She is so amazing to have finished that. I had to bug out at the end because when her mom popped out and they all started to cry, I started to cry and it was too much!

You are awesome! Thanks for not snoring, letting me eat your cantaloupe, and indulging my ice cream dependency twice! I really am sorry I fell asleep in the car, I do not know why I was so wiped out yesterday! So mean of me, you were just as tired but you had to drive!

From Smooth on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 18:43:12 from 71.36.68.70

Rachel,

AWESOME! You're a GREAT friend, motivator and inspiration. So happy for Steph and Amy! What a day! What a race for you girls! How exciting. Wish I was there to cheer all of you in. Get some ZZZzzz! You so deserve it!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 19:45:41 from 24.8.167.243

Rachel,

That was an awesome race report and you did such a wonderful job at the race. It is so kind of you to put your effort into motivating and helping others.

I love what you wrote about seeing the same exhaustion in Amy's eyes as in Kelli's. I read a really fast runners race report yesterday and it struck me how the experience - the struggle, the exhaustion, the determination - is the same for a slow runner and for a fast runner.

From Leandra on Mon, Aug 31, 2009 at 11:59:03 from 71.35.248.36

what a great report! I love reading it. I completely agree, to me running isn't about all the money or medals or things like that (all though they are nice), it's about proving to myself I can actually do something I NEVER thought I would be able to do.

Very cool you were able to help 2 of your friends accomplish that goal!
