Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:


Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

I'm having a hard time not being happy about NOT getting my BQ. Despite doping up on prednisone the ITB pain started at mile 14....it was pain, but runnable; whereas before I'd have to walk/run it. Maybe I'm just getting used to running with the pain :) I did have to stop and stretch probably a dozen times, but after bumming some Motrin off a fellow runner at mile 19, miles 20-26 actually felt descent - considering.

This was a 20 minute PR for me...how can I NOT be happy? I also had a good mile 24, I had wonderful Smooth with me, in spirit! It was my positive affirmation mile "I run fast, I run strong, I can run all day long!" I kept muttering it loud enough for me to hear over and over with my footfalls, then when the 'hill' on Main St hit it was "I love hills, I love hills" - poor people around me...hope they had some good loud music on their ipods :)

Honestly, I don't know if it was nutrition or not tapering properly or what, but by mile 4 I wanted to walk. My legs/quads were tired, at that point I knew it was going to be a long race. However, when I hit my 1/2 at 1:46:30 I got some energy...maybe I CAN do this BQ thing after all...then the ITB pain happened. Like I said it was runnable, but between stopping to stretch and some short walking breaks at water stops, I figured it was gone... Then just past mile 23 someone asked me what time it was WHAT? "No, the time you've been running." Oh, and despite auto stop screwing up overall time I was still at 3:19. Hmmm, I all of a sudden realized that I could pull out a sub 3:50 (My watch was probably down a good 3 minutes at this point). So, I went with a smile and 'no bend' knees :)

I had some good memories and learned a lot this marathon. Felt good at the finish, when I turned the last corner and saw the finish I said "YES! heaven awaits". Despite heartburn after the first gatorade stop, getting to the start with NO time to prepare, lead legs at mile 4, ITB pain at 14 I felt great. Seriously...how can I complain? I knocked 20 minutes off my best marathon in 4 months.

My family and I stayed with a friend and her parents in Logan, they were WONDERFUL! I am so glad for running friends that you can meet once, forge an internet relationship with and run an amazingly successful race with! Plus, Craig and the kids met me at a few different places on the route. I stopped and hugged my babies and kissed my honey each time, I'd take that over a BQ any day! 

I think those were the highlights for me, besides seeing so many AWESOME people and being encouraged by them all!! Lowell and Terry at the start, Smooth at 14, pulling with Chris through 24, hearing Bec cheer for me at the finish, and seeing MrsFit on the way out. Friends ROCK thank you all for your encouragement and help (even those I didn't get to SEE!) - I feel like the most blessed person on the earth!

*Remember I forgot to turn off auto stop, so when stretching etc it got behind so some splits maybe faster than actual*

total time - (on Garmin) 3:46:26 AP: 8:33 Actual total time 3:49:45 AP: 8:45

Garmin splits - 7:59, 7:51, 7:52, 8;09, 8:03, 8:21, 8:04, 7:59, 7:49, 8:23, 8:06, 8:18, 7:37, 8:01, 8:25, 9:07, 8:52, 9:24, 9;21, 9:16, 8:52, 9:26, 9:16, 9:05, 9:10, 9:28, 8:50 (last .45 on Garmin) you can really tell where I lost the pace, but it all turned out well! 25th in my AG and 113 Female overall - not too shabby!

Great job Rachel. I can't believe you cut your marathon time 20 minutes in just 4 months. How fast do you have to run to BQ? I'm glad you had fun with your hubby and kids because that makes it all worthwhile.

Devine Miss M - very nice marathon, TOU is a tough second half. 500 commando points for the PR. You will have many more PRs in the future, I expect within the next two years you will break 3:30, you will have more experience on what works for you with training, etc. you have young running legs and a strong running spirit. (I was not too far off on your time) Question, how many women runners in the race and how many in your division?

RACHEL ~ YOU ARE AWESOME! LOVE reading your report! You have trained hard, learned much and shared/given a ton. You DID FANTASTIC at your TOU debut!!! 20 minutes PR in 4 months is HUGE!!!! TOU's second half is mean; that last uphill is cruel. 99% of the runners struggled mentally if not physically on the last 10K. WAY to remember the mantra: "I run fast, I run stong....I love hills..." I'll bet your "chanting" helps push/pull fellow racers. Those not have ear buds on would appreciated that so much!

Your beautiful long legs have the speed. Your mental toughness is getting stronger. Recover well, strengthen that ITB once the soreness is gone. In your next training cycle, gradually increase your tempo miles. That BQ is well within your reach. Meanwhile savor the HUGE PR victory. You are just going to get faster and stronger. YOU ROCK!

25/187 in my AG and 119/1009 Female finishers (results posted yesterday said 113...sorry) 13 mile split was 1:45:56 20 miles was 2:50:20 (1:04:24 for the 7) then the last 6.2 split was in 59:24.

I am so proud of you Rachel. This was your day to shine. I loved seeing that pink visor gliding down the road, as you crossed the finish line. Thank you for the morning chat, your presence gave me energy for the run. This was your third marathon, and by golly, you were amazing! i am so happy that you ran such a great race and that the ITBs were manageable. i loved that you were muttering your mantras aloud. at mile 24 i was in such bad shape that i couldn't even mutter. i think i was growling/moaning...this was scaring all the kids and alarming all the adults. LOL. whatever gets you through. i am so glad i had the chance to meet you this year and i will look forward to seeing you at future races. great job once again.

Rachel, Rachel, Rachel, you are amazing!!! Wow, a 20 minute PR. That second half was tough, mostly the last 6 miles. I did look for the tall girl with a pink visor at the start, but none of the tall girls had pink visors. Oh well, next time. By the way, what is your next marathon? What aggravates the ITB? Going downhill? Uphill? Maybe a nice flat marathon would be good. There's gotta be one somewhere. I'd like to try one.
