Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Urban Trail Loop with the Newtons. Got a good SOJO recap from Ronny and had a great morning just chatting. Except I've exhausted all my stories with Chad...too many runs together this week :)

Ronny peeled off early due to a knee problem, so it was just Chad, George and I for the remainder. I really love that little trail loop!

The last .10 in the parking lot I told Chad to bring it and had him push me to a strong finish. I dropped him just at the last turn...ugggh, so close. Someday :)

AP: 8:44 splits: 9:15, 9:12, 8:39, 8:18, 8:36, 8:49, 8:54, 8:07 - garmin says I was down around 5:45 the last 'sprint' with Chad.

Went home and slept for an hour before I had to get up and get the kids off to school. They were pretty much ready and just eating breakfast by the time I got brave enough to get out of the warm bed.

Did spin class at the gym. Heidi's Thursday classes are always a good push! I love her classes. 55 min and 21 miles. Stretched, chatted and came home.

I'm hoping my little stinker of a 2 year old sleeps this afternoon - and I can too! When I woke up to get out this morning so did he. I put him back to bed, but then when I went downstairs he got up again and wanted milk. I was late to group, because I had to put him back to bed twice. I thought he'd at least sleep in - nope. Up when I got home at 7AM. What the heck kid?!? I swear he doesn't need sleep. Luckily, between my hubby getting ready for work and my daughter getting ready for school there was someone to entertain him while I grabbed my morning nap. Now, I think he needs to sleep this afternoon.

Did 60 min of spin bike/reading in the morning at the gym before I had to head home for Kindergarten pick-up.

Afternoon met Dianna at Yellowfork and ran the 7 mile loop. It was a beautiful afternoon and the dogs had a great adventure. I did learn one thing - I don't ever want to die by being run over by a cow. Those things are BIG and scary! One came thundering down the hill toward the trail and then tried to stop on the trail about 3 feet in front of me. Holy Moly! I'm just glad the cow didn't have a calf! The dogs came right back to us and we all sat and waited for Ms Cow to get back up above the trail with the rest of the herd.

I had a moral decision to make today (well, I made it on Friday, but still). I had planned on running the 5K for a BBKer that had recently been diagnosed with brain cancer. He has fought well and is astounding the doctors with his recovery and progress. The race wasn't a financial benefit for him, but would go to Huntsman Cancer Institute. As much as I support him and want him to know my heart and love goes out to their family, I knew I wouldn't be 'missed' by the crowd there.

My daughter asked me Thursday if I had any races on Saturday "ummmm,well...no, not really, but yes...why?" She said that they were combining the adult and kid iTri classes at the gym and she wanted me to go to class with her. My 11 year old daughter wanted me to come with her. How can I refuse that precious time? I've been doing races/runs every Saturday for the past 5 weeks and will be gone next week for LV Ragnar. There will come a time very soon that she won't want me around. I thought about it longer than I probably should've then told her that I would choose to spend time with her at the tri class instead of with running friends. I felt like my support would be put to better use with her. Not that Dean doesn't care, but I know if he was presented with the same situation he wouldn't hesitate to spend the time with family, because he knows how precious and fleeting the time is. So, with confidence I slept in and joined my daughter for the tri class.

We started in the pool - 30 min to do as many 200yd sets you could. We swam them race style up and back then under the lanes. Good practice! I got 7 of them in - 1400yds. I might have been able to sneak one more in, but after my first lap one of my daughters friends who was doing the class with her mom for the first time was on the side of the pool fretting and on the verge of tears. She only feels comfortable swimming backstroke. It was overwhelming to her to see all these kids (even her age) doing free-style so easily and, I'm sure, was afraid people would laugh or make fun of her. I gave her a little pep talk and we got in the pool together. I waited for her on the first lap to get down and back and feel confident enough to finish the next 3 laps. She did great and ended up finishing 3 sets. Lauren did 7 sets too. She was trying to beat me, but I hung with her! She is a great little swimmer.

The bike...oh, the bike. I think of everything in the tri world this is the one that gets me. I hate the computers on the bikes now too...just too many numbers to deal with in my head! I set up my bike next to Lauren and we had 30 min to get in as many miles as we could. Well, I prefer to ride with some resistance. Probably more than most people, but then the teacher had us ride hills too. Poo. I could barely keep up with Lauren on mileage. Then I noticed I'm dying and breathing hard and she still can breathe with her mouth closed! Well, I made her add some resistance on and then not cheat on the full turns on the hill adds. I finally caught up to her miles :) She did more than most of the kids, but I was at the bottom of the rung for miles on the bike. Still 11 miles in 30 minutes is a good 22mph pace! I think pretty darn good. I don't understand how some were getting 13+, that really isn't typical for average riders to go 26mph+. Anyway, my own snobby rationalization for being the bottom I guess.

Finally, it was time for the run! They had us running on the track and every 3 laps we would signal to the teacher that would record a tally mark. My goal was to get 4 miles in the 30 minutes. I finally figured out that when I had 11 tally marks I would have 3 miles. So, I asked for my 5K split on the next lap 23:13 - 7:30 pace. I pretty much stayed consistent with that pace to finish the 4 miles with just 7 seconds to spare. 29:48 for the 4 miles. 7:29 pace...just under MP and not even 10K pace. Yeah, I was tired - I guess :) more rationalization. Lauren got 36 laps in (11/mile), so just over a 5K in the 30 minutes. She and her friend (the one from the swim story) hung together the whole time and kept a good solid pace the entire time. Way to go girls! They counted every time I lapped them - I think it was 13 or 14 or something like that.

So, we both finished almost a sprint tri and I had a wonderful morning with my daughter! Her friends mom wanted to go outside for a few more miles so I tagged along on the next 4 outside. It was a wonderful morning! The girls had fun hanging out at the rec center afterward while moms ran off too :) We were going to meet at frogurt afterward, but they didn't open until 1:00 - poo. But, we had a great time regardless!

This is going to be a week of odd miles...so I started it out right!

Just did 1 hour on the TM, started at 8:37 pace for 15 min, then 8:29 for 15 min, 8:20 for 15 min, then 8:13 for 7 min and the last 8 min I did starting at MP 7:47 and the last 3 min went progressive to 6:56. I had exactly 7.2 miles in the 60 min, so an AP of 8:20. All at 1% incline.

I love running. Today I am grateful for my able body that just loves it. I didn't want to spin or swim today...I wanted to run. I plugged in, sat back and enjoyed it! I wish everyone ran, then everyone could feel this good all the time too.

Then I did some good resistance stuff - my normal routine, plus.

side steps w/band, big toe/little toe calf raises, lunges, one-leg lift bridges, then a sprint around the track and back-ups (opposite of sit-ups). Repeated 3X Then I added some elbow raises, overhead presses and skull crushers X3 for good measure. Stretch and get out of the gym.

Oh HAPPY DAY!!! Guess who is back for a week? oh yeah baby! Becca! So, I found a sitter and met her at her sister's house in Draper for a run. We ran up to PRT then along the trail for a few miles and turned back. Man, it was hotter than I expected - we both wanted water, but all the fountains are turned off. We passed a school holding elections and we decided to go in, hoping that with voters in there we wouldn't be considered a safety risk. When we got back I didn't have time to chat, I had to go get baby for music class. But, we've got plans this week! Plenty of chat time.

It was like we hadn't missed a beat. Same old chatting and fun. I missed Becca. Only problem was I ditched the Newtons for this run. My plan was to do the normal 10 with them and then add 6 or 8 with Becca. Well, baby wasn't very nice last night and had me up more times than I'd like to count. So, when the alarm went off I decided the 6 or 8 with Becca would be enough - I was going to sleep! I guess if I have an alternative, I won't wake up early :) Sad part is, once I got up and called them (and they called back) I couldn't really get back to sleep. It took a long time...with lots of guilt. Should've just gone.

AP: 8:15 splits: 8:56, 8:42, 8:25, 8:10, 8:23, 7:54, 8:08, 8:08, 7:55, 7:48

Plan to do a 15ish mile ride this afternoon with a friend in my new ward boundaries that is a cyclist! I'm excited to have a workout buddy, and not be the only crazy one in the ward. She is doing her first tri in 2013, but has knee issues. So, she won't ever be a huge runner, but I'm still excited!

16 miles with Kristy on the Mtn View Corridor. Good times! I hope to be able to keep up with her next time :)

Another fun morning with Becca. Have I mentioned how much I missed her? :)

6 miles on the JRP. Man, it was windy this morning. We started South so that we got the uphill and wind done first and could enjoy the 2nd half. I'm glad my watch was in bike mode those first three miles...no splits to admit to! AP for the first 3 miles was 8:53 AP for the last 3 miles was 8:04; splits: 8:23 (the hill), 7:57, 7:51.

Now, I'm done for the day. My arms and legs hurt from my Monday workout at the gym and my house is a disaster! So, I'm taking the full day and WILL stay focused on cleaning this pig sty of a home!

Becca came out early and we went on my classic 6 mile loop. My stomach wasn't happy with me. I'm glad Becca was there to help me through my misery...it always loves company!

AP: 8:57

Afterward I got kids off to school then we went to Kneaders for breakfast! YUM!

Went home and packed up for Ragnar, my mom came to help with the kids and Kimberly picked me up at 3PM and I was off for a long drive down to Vegas....

Picked up the 6th van member in Cedar and then went to St George for dinner. DD's Pizza! My favorite! I was SO excited. It is just a little mom/pop restaurant and they had a sign on the door that due to family illness they were temporarily closed until further notice :( SO sad! I don't get my pizza AND there is something wrong in the family. We had to do Brick Oven instead. It was good, but still sad about DD's Pizza.

Got into Vegas late and just crashed on the air mattresses with plans of a big breakfast in the morning and lots of fun.

Woke up and went to a nice big breakfast at Lumberjacks. Yum! We definitely ate well our last meal. Then we did some errands and shopping and I picked up Krispy Kremes for the team when we drove by and I saw they were HOT! :)

After getting dressed, cleaning up, decorating and packing the truck we were off and away to the first exchange. Van 1 had started at 6AM and we had until about 1PM before we started running. While there I got to chat with Burt who had finished 2 legs already and was ready for some more Ragnar action, and my neighbor who was down for the race as well. Rachelle's first van hadn't even started yet! Yeah...she was on a fast team :)

(helping Jeff and Jason load the truck...or just standing around talking...you decide :) )

I was the 2nd runner and was SO ready to run! However, the wind stopped me in my tracks once I got started. They said sustained winds of 30mph with gusts to 59mph...yeah, I was happy when I turned and it was a cross wind instead of a head wind. Something different about Vegas Ragnar is that you run through town...and there is no traffic control. You MUST wait for the lights. Kind of messes up your pace, so I 'cheated' and stopped my garmin when I had to stop for the 2 lights I didn't make. Also, my veggie omelet I'd had that morning kept threatening to make a re-appearance...yuck. Too many big meals in a row! I was happy it was over. Never became road kill, my biggest goal.

(Kimberly handing off to me! LET ME RUN!! :) )

AP: 7:20 splits: 7:24, 7:35, 7:01, 7:00, 7:28, 7:45 (last .57)

I was pleased with my first run and pace. I loved the gentle downhill! Like running down 13400S...perfect. When our 4th runner was out we went to cheer her on and some guy started yelling profanities out his window at us because he was trying to sleep...I guess he didn't want any more cow bell :) That is the bad part about running through town.

At the van exchange the sun was going down and we were getting cold...SO cold. We knew the horrible wind and cold was going to put a damper on our night run. We went to Jason's deli for dinner where I ate light, just a salad, and then we went shopping at Target. I had warm running clothes, but no warm clothes to wear afterward. I got some fuzzy pants and socks. The pants were only about 5 inches too short for me :) High fashion baby...high fashion.

(the team, less one runner running, at the exchange after our first runs)

We found the next major van exchange and it was just a dirt parking lot. No where to sleep. They'd cautioned against sleeping next to your vehicle, because someone might try to park on top of you! So, with no grass (except on the private property of the hotel near us which we were also told NO to sleeping on) we hunkered down in the truck. All 4 girls packed like sardines in the back...on our sides and we had to switch sides in unison. It was tight, but warm! The wind was crazy and we were all a little panicky about running in the wind and cold. The 2 guys used the truck seats to sleep, but somehow didn't get any blankets to use! So, they were cold and didn't sleep well. I guess the bag of blankets got put under the truck outside. Silly boys! They should've just looked.

(Hillary, Kimberly and I sardined in the back of the truck...no we didn't squish together for the photo. We slept that close :) big and little spoon at the same time!)

(Melissa and I, we couldn't get all 4 of us in one picture, again same story on not squishing together :) - oh, and who wears their visor to sleep?!? duh. I guess I was really ready to run!)

We got a few good hours of restless sleep in (typical Ragnar) and then all woke up ready to go...just had to wait another hour+ for the 1st van to finish their 2nd legs. The only good news was the horrible wind had died down! YIPEE!! It was going to be cold, but at least not crazy windy.

Race: Ragnar LV - #8 runner (31.54 Miles) 04:48:00
Total Distance
31.54

Just after midnight we started our 2nd legs. We followed a van out of the exchange that said "Never Nudes" on it....RACHELLE! So, I texted her and sure enough, it was her. Too bad her team was too fast and never wanted support :( They left us in the dust at the exchanges and I still didn't get to see her.

I ran my 2nd leg feeling great! Since it was night hours we could shadow run with our team. Kimberly and I both wanted more than just our measley 14ish miles, so we offered to run with anyone that would take us. She got the girls, I got the boys :)

The nice thing about this overnight route is that it was an out and back on Las Vegas Blvd. They closed the road (South of Vegas, so not IN the city) so it was only Ragnar traffic that went in and out of the 17 mile stretch.

It was a little chilly when I started, but at least I didn't feel like I was going to barf again! I was passing people like crazy and loving the night run! Then above my ipod I heard a deep, strong rumble...what the heck?!? I looked over...a train. Just between the road and I-15 rumbled a train, made me smile. I blew a little kiss to my daddy in heaven who was watching over me and felt supported through the rest of the run. It will be 6 years next week since he has been gone. Too long...seems like just yesterday I would go on hikes with him and get big daddy hugs. I sure miss him.

4.68 miles - AP: 7:34 splits: 7:25, 7:38, 7:41, 7:17, 7:53 (last .68) - it was definitely uphill. Some rollers, but nice uphill for most of it.

I passed off to Jeff and I was going to run with him. I wanted just a short drink first though. After I got done with my drink Jeff was gone! I ran fast to catch up with him and could hardly do it! DANG! He took off SO fast. Luckily I still had a sprint left in me and caught up to him. He settled into a perfect easy pace for me! I loved it. Jeff is deaf (and the team I was on was all interpreters, I'm not one, but know enough ASL to get through a conversation), and trying to sign while running isn't easy...especially in the dark. You can't look at the road infront of you and this road had a small shoulder and rumble strips on the outside of the white lines. You couldn't even really run next to each other - let alone sign AND run next to each other. So, I just stayed behind him off his left shoulder.

He had been having some ITB issues (along with 2 others in the van) and after about 1.25 miles he was ready to throw in the towel. I told him he should try to go on. I would take over if he needed, but that I believed he could do it and just try. He did, and he finished with that same wonderful pace! I was really proud of his effort. He is a great runner that has just started discovering what he can do.

3.37 miles - AP: 9:04 splits: 8:05, 9:55, 9:16, 8:53 (last .37)

Kimberly ran the next 2 legs (the reverse of Jeff's and mine) with Melissa and Hillary. They also are just starting their running journey, so it was a little slower with some walking due to ITB pain, but they finished in good style!

Give me a minute for the rest of the story....

Okay, I'm back :) I know I had you on the edge of your seat!

So, our last runner was my turn to shadow run again. Jason is a wonderful, gifted runner...but doesn't run! He hasn't run since Ragnar Wastach Back and we did 9 miles on our leg and he was pretty good about hitting 9mm the entire time. Kimberly and I now are riding him hard about training and actually RUNNING and not wasting his gift :) We had a good 80 minutes to just chat, he asked me how I got into running and well...he got the WHOLE story. He kept saying afterward "I can't believe it, she just talked and talked the whole time. I was dying and she was just chatting along!" He did have to answer some questions toward the end of the run after I finished, but that was probably only about a 1/2 mile worth :) Yup, I'm a chatter! We got a beautiful sunrise and view of Las Vegas in the breaking dawn. Oh, it was gorgeous! I love a good sunrise run!

8.31 miles AP: 9:23 splits: 9:03, 9:08, 8:58, 8:59, 9:04, 9:03, 9:46, 10:32, 10:51 (last .31) you can see he lost it a bit there at the end, but still...with NO training?!? yeah, Jason needs to run!

With Jason finished we headed to the last major exchange to eat and sleep before our last legs. I was just ready to go run more! That last leg just made me SO happy and it was just a perfect run. I wanted more and didn't want to wait! The whole van wanted to punch me. They were tired and ready to sleep and be done! :)

When we arrived at the HS I was excited to be able to change my clothes in a warm place and brush my teeth and wash my face and rinse off. Uggghh, nope. They were charging $1 to get IN the building. I thought using the bathroom would be free. I didn't want a full shower or to sleep...just a warm bathroom, but alas. It wasn't to be. Well, after eating I decided it was worth it. I was cold. So, I looked in my wallet...the only money I had left was change .98 cents. Yup, that was it. I just rolled my eyes. Well, Jeff went and got me a $1 so that I could go in. SO nice! But, he then made it known to all the team that he had paid me to change my clothes! :) HA! I guess it IS legal in Vegas.

I went inside and used the bathroom as my personal changing/washing area and it was nice to have warm water and flushing toilets. I got all prettied up for my last leg of running. Rachelle texted me back at some point and told me she was in the gym sleeping! I told her to come in the bathroom to see me...and that I was just brushing my teeth. We had a good chat, I finished up and she got called to get out to the van....almost time. I did get to see her again and say good-bye, but it wasn't long enough.

When I got done with the beauty session I crawled into the truck bed to try and sleep for a couple hours before our 3rd legs. The boys had decided to take sleeping bags onto the football field and Melissa took a bench in the truck, so there were only 3 girls in the back. SO much nicer...a little room to move. I smiled an evil smile when I heard the marching band start practice out on the football field :) It didn't bother Jeff, but Jason had a fun time trying to sleep through it!

After a couple hours poor Hillary was in SO much pain with her ITB she could hardly shift positions to sleep. So, we all kind of woke up and started chatting about our last legs. We finally decided that Jeff would take my 4.4 miler and I'd take his 9 miler. Melissa would take Hillary's 3.3 miler and Kimberly would run Melissa's longer leg of 7.5 AND her 6.2 miler. We had a plan and we were ready to run! Met with van 1 and watched their triumphant finish...then took off. Nobody was going to be a hero, but we were going to finish it!

Kimberly's first leg ended up being completely unsupported and a mile long. But, she felt like I did at the end of my 9 miler earlier in the morning, so it was all good! Jeff took off, but as we passed him on the freeway he indicated that he was done. We found a way to sneak onto the course and I ran the remaining half of his leg for him since both of his ITBs were screaming. That last little uphill was rough! Yikes. Glad I didn't have to do it all.

1.45 miles - AP: 8:45 splits: 8:27, 9:27 (last .45)

(taking off to finish Jeff's leg) ready to run baby!

At the exchange I waited for the team to bring me my visor (I'd called them when I realized I'd forgotten it and asked them to meet me) and a drink. The lady there kept looking at me, then said "we called your team #, but got no answer!" I simply responded that my runner was close and waited for my stuff. As soon as I got it and thanked Jason I slapped the bracelet on my wrist and said "Well, here she is!" and I took off. HA! I would've loved to see that lady's face :)

The leg that I picked up...holy wow. 1500 ft of elevation loss! I couldn't believe it. SO downhill it was crazy! I thought for sure something was going to break on me. There was a little uphill around mile 4 and I felt like all of a sudden I couldn't run. Gravity wasn't working with me anymore! I was tired, but just kept running. I thought for sure I'd gone at least 1/2 way...looked at the garmin and it was only 3.2 miles. Uggghhh. I was ready to be done. I just knew the faster I ran the faster I'd finish! I'd asked the team to try and find somewhere to pull over and give me water, but they never came :( Luckily, there were a couple tables with water cups on them, so I just grabbed some.

I finally saw the truck and tried to flag them down...to no avail. I wanted a drink! They finally saw me and I was lucky I was on an ASL team! I signed "water, please." They drove down a bit and Kimberly ran it out to me. Perfect. I only had 2 miles left...I can do this.

Well, I finally passed the "one mile to go" sign at 8.6....ugghh...really?!? Where the heck is the dang exchange?!? I was tired and done. I wanted to stop SO bad! But, I just kept pushing forward. I was glad my legs had held up and I didn't have any aches and pains from the crazy downhill, but I was done. The view flying down into the Lake Mead Valley was breathtaking! Sun was breaking through the clouds at certain points, and well, it was just gorgeous. The view was the only thing taking my mind off the pain and suffering. Yet, even at the end I didn't care anymore. I just wanted to be done!

I finally spotted the exchange point and at 9.73 miles I was finally done with "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" on my ipod. Fitting, huh? :)

9.73 miles - AP: 7:07 splits: 7:06, 6:54, 7:00, 7:30 (uphill bit), 7:04, 6:59, 6:47, 7:00, 7:12, 7:41 (last .73). You can see I died at the end, but I was still pleased with my splits and AP for how much I'd done the previous 24 hrs.

My team was happy to see me exhausted. They kept saying I was the "Olympian" on the team. I would laugh and tell them they had NO idea how far from the truth that was! But, it was a nice compliment still :) So, the team was happy to see me cussing my creative cuss words and ready to finally be done and not have that chipper positive attitude any more!

Driving to support Kimberly on her run we took a detour to an overlook at Lake Mead...SO beautiful. I wanted a 'peak jump' shot...so I got out and attempted to jump, twice. Well, I got a decent picture anyway :)

(my 'peak jump' attempt at Lake Mead)

During the drive to the exchange from Kimberly to Melissa we realized it would be night hours (3:45PM - 6AM) and that we'd need safety clothing (head lamp, tail light, reflective vest) AND that we could shadow run. My legs were SO stiff and sore and starting to stiffen and cramp. Since after 5 min my bad attitude wore off and I was Miss Positive again, I remarked that I was ready to move my legs again! Well, Melissa was worried about this one, because her knee and groin we bothering her really bad. She said her goal was 13mm if I wanted to come along. I figured I could probably keep up. So, I threw on my gear and we took off together when Kimberly came in.

Holy Smokes, it was probably one of the worst uphill stretches in the whole race. But, it had rollers and the downhill was really hurting Melissa. We probably ran a mile or more of it, but the rest we speed walked. Our 14mm was well earned and it really helped me move out the lactic acid so I wasn't SO horribly sore. We also had a really good, uplifting, personal chat along the way with a few tears shed. Then, we were treated to one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen! Made the whole trip worth it. Even though it ended up 4 miles instead of 3, it was still perfect.

4 miles - AP: 14:26 splits: 12:21, 14:38, 16:18, then the garmin died. Yup. But, Melissa had Edmondo on and it tracked it just over 4, so I'm going with that.

Jason had the task of finishing up the last leg. We drove to the finish and after forever finally parked and walked down to the finish line. About 100 yds from the finish Jason passed us. We cheered for him and tried to run after him...nope, didn't work. We were cold and had blankets around us. THEN they had the runners go through a sand volleyball pit with the net STILL up! What the heck?!? are you trying to kill people?!? It was dark and hard to see the net too. ugghhh. Anyway, so we said "Jason! Wait for us." he replied "hurry up!" Then I just laughed and said "did he just tell me to hurry up?!?" I'd just run 37+ miles and he was telling ME to hurry up. HA! Good times. We all finally made it to the finish and did our ceremonial finish line photo, got the big medals, some got their saints and sinners (I was just a sinner) medal, and then we went to dinner.

Jason's Deli again for dinner. Oh, I'm in love (we all were) with their baked potatoes. Those things are monstrous! The broccoli and cheese one...divine. I ate one all myself and had a small cup of veggie soup and a few chips with salsa. A well deserved meal after Ragnar.

We all headed back to the condo to sleep and take our 5 min max (nazi lady from the other van would nearly pull you out naked if you went over time!) shower. Well, I started looking for my purse to pay for gas etc....and I'd left it at the Deli!!! Uggghhh! It was clear on the other side of town. A good 30 min drive away. Jeff offered to take me, because when I called they said they had it and would be there until 11PM. I was SO grateful that it had been picked up and not stolen! Total blessing! Then Jeff was nice enough to take another hour to drive me there and back. We had a good chat and I was happy that I was doing so well with my signing that I was understanding everything he said and I could communicate my stories too. He is good people, and I really like him!

Finally got back and everyone was asleep. I crawled onto the air mattress with Kimberly and I was cold :( I just couldn't warm up. When the other van left at the crack of dawn I took over one of the real beds and finally slept well.

We woke up and some of the gals had gotten in the hot tub, but I just slept longer :) We packed up and cleaned up and then took off for home. I thought we might stop by Pawn Stars, but nope. Jeff and I were disappointed.

We had such a fun ride home! You know after you've shared so much with people on your team for these 4 days that life just gets fun. We were all rested and Kimberly and I were convincing everyone that they were runners. We'd get cussed at, but it was still fun :)

We ate up the rest of the candy/snacks from grocery shopping and got ice cream in Scipio. Best. Stop. Ever. Told fun jokes and played fun games. I almost didn't want to go home. I'd missed my family, but having 'adult' fun was a nice change from the daily grind of my life.

I'm still not 100% converted to Ragnar, but I liked this one a LOT more than Wasatch Back. I think the people/your team is what makes or breaks your experience. I'm glad my team all felt like they had a good experience and that we now want to do Napa Valley! I can't wait :)

My legs aren't super sore from Ragnar and my gazillion miles, but they are fatigued. No major aches, but I think it best to take a few days off to recover before I DO get injured.

Met Becca at my gym, she did a TM workout...killin' the speed and miles! I walked at 4.0% incline at 3.5 mph. I did 1.75 miles total in the time I was there. Said goodbye to Becca :( Then did the spin bike for another 35 minutes. Chatted too much and had to pay an extra punch for daycare. stink. oh well.

Still don't feel like the legs are ready for a run...so I did the elliptical for an hour, because I didn't want to spin either.

Saw Kelli as I was leaving so I jumped on the TM and chatted/walked with her for the next 10 min until I had to go get baby from daycare.

I felt like I was ready to run a bit today, so I did the TM for 3 easy miles. Progressive starting at 6.8mph and finishing at 7.6mph. AP: 8:27

I was going to finish up on the elliptical, but my friend I hadn't talked to in a while was running alone on the track, so I caught up with her and chatted for a bit. Well...that bit turned into well over 20 minutes. She runs slower, so I'm going to just assume it was around 2 miles. Good chat!

Then, I saw Adam walking up the stairs with the day care worker...crud. Well, it was just a poopy diaper - thankfully. Changed him and finished up the last 15 min on the elliptical. stretched a little and headed home. The 'off season' is a nice time!

Urban Trail Loop with the Newtons. I thought there would be more snow on the trail, but there was little to NO snow. Just holes and rocks to twist ankles on...Chad and I both tried!

Good pace for the fatigue in my legs. At least it was under a 9mm. I made everyone stop at mile 4.5 just before jumping on the trail so that I could catch my breath and relax for a second....yeah, I'm not still recovering, why do you ask? :)

AP: 8:54, splits: 9:13, 9:07, 8:56, 8:36, 9:06, 8:48, 9:01, 8:23 - I always run those first 4 progressive, then I hit the trail and it all goes to pot. At least the last mile was a good pace, even though I felt like I was running a 7:00mm!

Got home and had 1 hr to sleep before kids wake up time. Took that long to get warm, even in dry clothes. Gotta love winter running. Well, sad thing is I got them up then scurried back under the covers to get warm again and I fell asleep. Good thing my kids are pretty self-sufficient in the morning. I woke up exactly 1 min past "on time leaving" time for school. Threw lunches together and got the kids to school on time...not early, but on time.

It was these short 10 minutes where I decided that I didn't want to go to the gym. My legs are fatigued and tired. 8 miles is enough, right? I'm still in recovery and don't need to pay to abuse myself and break down a broken down body any more. So, I went home and snuggled on the couch with my baby for a couple hours. Perfection.

One hour of spin bike while reading. My shins aren't too happy with me. Not horrible mind you. Nothing that needs meds, but something that I need to pay attention to with fatigued legs and after my crazy last month! Body needs a rebuild session.

Oh, and if you haven't, you need to read "Once a Runner" best fiction book written about runners/running EVER. You will sit and nod and FEEL some of the passages as they describe breakdown training, distance runs, interval training, highs and lows of running, races...oh my. Seriously, an AWESOME book! I'm almost done :)

A beautiful morning run with Smooth and Luz! I haven't run with Luz in eons and I soaked up every wonderful minute. No speed or distance records were broken, but I had the most wonderful perfect run. I truly love those ladies! The weather was wonderful too. We got a little sprinkle on the way home, but that was it.

I got there a bit late due to my insomniac of a two year old, but the ladies waited for me. However, I didn't realize that Chad was waiting to run into us as well. We did end up seeing him just before Willow Park and got to run a couple miles with him before he headed home! I miss these runs and all the wonderful people I run them with!! It was great to see you out and feeling good Chad!

I thought the ladies only wanted to run 6 or 8 so I kept expecting them to turn around, but we nearly got to the end of the trail before Luz asked how far we'd gone...over 5 miles. I wasn't complaining :) It would be the furthest Luz had gone since her last full, she was a little nervous. On the way back we stopped at Willow Park and the scouts that had done winter camp were out in full force. Finally warmed up with breakfast in their guts and playing - not just sitting around the fire. A group of boys were playing 500 with a football as we ran by. Since the football hit the ground, I sprinted ahead and tried to grab it, but another kid got to it at the same time. I said "hey, no! I want the ball...it's mine!" I grabbed it out of his hands and with some maniacal laughter started running away and told them they could have it if they could catch me. The boys all got a good laugh out of the old lady trying to play football. I threw it back to the thrower and then ran off waving amidst the cheers and thumbs up. Oh yeah, I'm cool like that :) I'm the mom that belongs at scout camp.

We all finished 10.25 and Luz was on cloud nine about how well her body had fared and how well she felt. Then, Smooth said the magic word "Kneaders" = Heaven! :) Well, 3 hours later I finally headed home. Yup, perfect morning. I owe my hubby BIG time for letting me go AWOL this morning. Too bad letting him out of the Turkey Day 5K I just registered him for when he said "I'd rather sleep in on my holiday" isn't on the table!

Anyone want to do a Black Friday Run?!?

6 mile walk and chat with my sweet daughter. We walked to the library and home...had books to drop off, so why not? She took Lucy and I pushed Adam in the stroller. We left the crazy boys behind at home with dad.

Funny part? got home and needed to rush off to choir practice at the church, so I drove the .25 mile there. HA! I can walk to the library and back, but I need to drive to the church :)

I think the end of my week is going to be a little heavy on the miles, so I keeping the first part easy. Still not 100% recovered from my Ragnar adventure either. Better safe than sorry, right?

5 TM miles. I was only going to go 3, but I decided I would run 9 songs. First 3 songs at 7.0, next 3 at 7.1, then the last 3 I went progressive to 7.5 each song. When I finished I had .15 left to finish up 5, so I did 7:47 and then 6:53 pace to finish up. A little longer than expected, but I had a great run.

I walked to cool down and chatted with my friend on the TM next to me, and then we walked a bit on the track with another friend. I stretched and then was going to leave when I spotted Sara just coming into the gym. She has wanted to do a specific upper body workout with me for a few weeks now, but we've never coordinated schedules well enough. So, I figured I could leave Adam in the daycare for another hour and I went to workout with her.

I got my butt handed to me! Back, shoulders and arms. I couldn't tell you everything we did...but don't ask me to pick up my kids for the rest of the week! I feel stronger already :)

10 mile classic loop with the Newtons...well, George and Chad. It took me until mile 6 to finally start feeling good and warmed up, don't know if that is a good sign or not...maybe it was because that was the first of the downhill miles :)

AP: 8:29 splits: 8:17, 8:29, 8:37, 8:40, 8:54, 8:41, 8:17, 7:54, 8:29, 8:31

Then I came home and slept for a bit...I love a good morning nap cuddled in a warm blanket. Oh, also on my Christmas wish list? An electric blanket :)

Adam's music class was canceled this week because of Thanksgiving, so he could finally go to swim class! He was SO excited. I was going to do some spin first, but by the time I got my act together and got to the gym I didn't want to pay for just 20 minutes - they charge by the hour. So Adam and I walked around the track and punched the punching bags until class started.

A nice water aerobics class for me then swim time for him. Besides being freezing cold he loved it!

Then I got to visit with a good friend that moved 6 months ago in her new home and my family and I went out to dinner to my dad's favorite hamburger joint - Ab's - and we got a FAT boy. Best burger around and even my boys ate theirs up and loved it. Dad had great taste in food, knew how to eat and ate well! A wonderful day to celebrate a wonderful man. I lost my dad 6 years ago today. Always a bitter sweet day. I love that I texted my sisters in the morning and then when I checked my email at home later they'd both already sent me a sweet message. Yup, Bye-wing, QP and I have one of the best fathers around...yes, he is still around :) and his kids are pretty darn great too! He left a legacy to be admired.

Yes, I'm the cute little baby on daddy's shoulders. They love me best :) You can fight over whic one you think QP and Bye-wing are.

Race: Thankful Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 02:07:50

Lovely morning half marathon! Ran with Jason who has run Wasatch Back Ragnar and LV Ragnar....and nothing between. It was his first half and AT Ragnar Kimberly and I convinced him he was wasting his running gift and that he needed to run a half. This wasn't the best to start with, but now all the rest will seem easy!

The wind was crazy and around Thanksgiving Point the hills aren't always easy, but Jason pulled through in GREAT fashion for only running 9 miles at the most beforehand. He ran the whole way and never walked. He grabbed water and drank at a couple aid stations and had one gu at mile 8, but that was it. Stellar performance! Now, he needs to do more!!! :)

My hubby and kids did the 5K, but results...well, what results? The awards were crazy. The guy couldn't see on his laptop (because we were outside FREEZING!) and he finally just said "here is how this is going to go. If you are here, you won, take a pie." Whatever. I know I didn't win anything, but since they had a bounce house and the kids were happy I froze for the raffle...which ended up not existing anyway. But, we got a Costco HUGE pumpkin pie from leftovers at the 'post race feed' table. Awesome.

Everyone had a good time despite being cold. A wonderful morning for sure!

AP: 9:41 splits: 9:03, 8:50, 8:55, 9:10, 8:57, 9:55 (aid station stop), 9:29, 10:38 (another stop, but slowing and into the wind), 10:02, 10:01, 10:32 (hills and wind - Kimberly and I tried to make a wind block, but he was slowing too), 11:02 (aid station walk and HILL), 9:39 (ahh, wind at the back and finish line ahead!), 8:06 (finishing sprint the last .2 on garmin).

Before and After the race. We stayed in Kimberly's truck before so that we could stay warm as long as possible!

Black Friday Run with Peeps! Rachelle, Kelli, Chad, George and Christine all met me at a park by the Mtn View Corridor and we headed for the hills. When everyone took off up the first hill TO the road I knew this wouldn't be a walk in the park! I guess that is what I get for inviting crazy fast people. My legs were a little trashed from yesterday too. Not horrible, but not fresh either.

We had a great run and chat and we did the rollers out to Redwood, at the Jr High we spotted Amy and she ran from there to the turn around with us....then we climbed the mother hill back UP from Redwood. Christine was coming toward Redwood just as we finished at the top of the hill. We invited her to come back with us, but she wanted to take on the hill too! So...we let her :)

The run back I just ran out of steam. I don't know if I was too hot or didn't fuel properly or what, but I was lightheaded and dizzy. Thankfully, Rachelle was willing to stay back with my slow butt! We chatted and Kelli stopped at the pop and Amy cut off to go home. So, I ate a couple jelly beans I had with me and drank some. I knew I only had the wonderful downhill to finish, so I was golden. Still didn't feel on top of the world, but doable.

Finished up 13 miles...rounding out a full marathon in the last 24 hours. I LOVE holiday weekends! Then I drove Chad and Kelli home (they'd both run to the park) and Kelli invited me in for some yummy Great Harvest bread and Hot Cocoa. That girl knows how to refuel! After some more chatting I headed home for a relaxing weekend. Love lazy weekends!

AP: 8:35 (for how I was feeling and the 1000ft of elevation gain from the hills I'll take it!) splits: 8:39, 8:47, 8:59, 8:27, 8:22, 8:21, 9:10 (mother hill from Redwood), 8:33, 8:32, 8:48, 8:02 (DOWN!), 8:22, 8:31

Thanks everyone for a wonderful Black Friday RUN! Much more preferable than shopping...uggghh, I hate shopping.

Well, I finally put my big girl panties on and joined the boy's club (Scott and Jun) for a run up Lake Mountain. I had to bring a posse with me, so I didn't feel so out of place. Kelli, Scott (her husband) and Chad and I all carpooled down to Saratoga to meet Scott W and Jun and their friend (Nate?) for the adventure.

Now, I'd like to say I got some trail running in on the way UP, but that would be a lie :) Okay, so maybe the first mile or so, but dang it! It gets steep and with my long legs it just got to the point where a long walking stride was easier and faster than a short running stride. I loved it when Jun (who was the sucker that got stuck with me at the back of the crowd) said "I can't keep up with your power walk!" and went into a slow jog. Bonus. I love long legs :)

My heart was beating out of my chest and I was working hard, so the fact that I wasn't exactly running wasn't an issue for me! As we neared the last switchbacks I could see we were near the top and my jubilation couldn't be contained any longer! I started yelling wonderful things as I made my way up the last little dirt trail to the radio towers. How enthralling it was to get such an awesome view for the morning effort! I felt like I was queen of the world...once my HR came down.

I was the last one up, but made it in 1:07:40...which I was told was a pretty decent, respectable time. Still the last one up, but at least it didn't take me 2 hours!

The way down was crazy business! I didn't realize how absolutely steep it was until I went down. Waaaay too steep to run, I felt like I was going to fall on my face just trying to walk down. Kelli and I stuck together on the way down and took it easy so that we didn't die...yes, we were the princesses of the group. After a mile or so the trail finally gets runable. It was here Scott and Jun and Kelli's hubby Scott met up with us and we all had a great chat and easy run down. It was still pretty darn steep and I knew my quads wouldn't be happy afterward, but compared to the top it was at least runable! Finally, the last mile on the approach road came. Perfect downhill running! Just enough to give you the advantage, but not enough to kill you :) I just plugged in and let it fly!

Finished the round trip in 1:48:00 - again, a respectable time from what I understand. At least I didn't collapse and die. That was my only goal!

Well, as I went to get my key out of my pocket I'd realized it wasn't there. Crap. I'd gotten a phone call about 1+ mile from the bottom, but when I saw it wasn't important I just threw my phone back in my pocket and zipped it up. I thought I'd felt my key in there when I'd zipped it up, but I was wrong...crap. I knew exactly where the key would've fallen out, but I really didn't want to run/hike back up and down. Dumb. I knew I should've just stopped and made sure the key was in there!! Well, luckily, the road was good enough for Scott W's CRV to drive on and sure enough...when we got to the point I knew I'd taken the phone out, there was the key, in the middle of the road just waiting for me! Tender Mercies. Thanks to Scott for driving me up there...my legs might not have made it and $200 for a new key wouldn't have happened!

Well, it was definitely an adventure! One I'd like to repeat very soon (except the lost key part). I love trail running and this was a well maintained, flat dirt road (not super technical). The vert was hard enough, I didn't need to add the technical stuff right away. I now know what 2800ft of climbing over 4 miles is like, and in a sadistic way...I love it! :)

I should've run a marathon Saturday...my legs would feel better than they do now :) The descent on Lake Mountain trashed my quads to say the least. So, since it isn't high training time I'm going to sit back and let them heal.

Also, my baby has been sick with a cough so I can't take him to the day care at the gym. Well, the perfect solution was me pushing him in the stroller around the track inside the gym. We were both happy and a good steady walk was about all my legs could handle anyway :) 60 min at a good pace.

Then I got on the bike with him in the stroller next to me (the bikes are on the track, so I could get away with this!) and I chatted with and played with him as I read and cycled for 60 minutes. Then I stretched and we left.

In the grocery store I called my friend to ask her to keep my Kindergartner for a few minutes for me until I got home and she told me that our friend whose son had been battling HLH for 2 years and gone through 2 bone marrow transplants and that we thought was on the improvement scale had passed away last night (Sunday).

The rest of the day is a blur of emotion and tears (and oreo eating). I don't know what to say or how to make it better. I want to take all her pain away. I want her to feel whole again. I want her to feel peace. My heart is just broken for her. The gospel is amazing and healing, but sometimes it doesn't stop the pain we mortals feel at times like this. I can only hope and pray that she is able to let the Lord carry this burden and speak peace to her soul. Shoes I never want to walk in. I brought them a bunch of food and treats to eat lunch before they headed down to St George for arrangements. Both sides of the family are there and he will be interned at Veyo cemetery. It will be bitter sweet running by in October, bitter sweet. But, I'll always have that warrior in my heart! He was a true warrior that kid. Fought hard to the end and always had a smile for you. I don't know what more to say, my heart is broken and I just wish I could do more. Sometimes just listening and being a shoulder to cry on is good enough, but I still wish I could do more. No one should ever have to bury a child, no matter how old that child is. You just shouldn't have to do that.

Walking on the track again with a sick baby in the stroller. We're headed to the doctor this afternoon :( He was coughing so hard last night I got thrown up on a couple times.

The first 45+ min of walking I would walk some, and then tried to run a bit. I eventually got to run one, walk one. My run was more of a walog (walk/jog), but at least it wasn't walking. My stroller shakes if you go too fast anyway, so it was a good way to keep myself in check.

Then after an hour-ish Kelli did her weight set with running between and the last couple she slowed and waloged along with me and the stroller :) Since she was counting laps I know I got 2 miles in with her and so the other mile I'm giving myself for the broken up miles. Not too shabby. Still sore and slow, but it is coming back.

I tricked my Sister in law into taking Adam for me :) okay, she is really just super nice and was willing to take the recovering sicky into her home this morning (all her kids are in school during the day). So, I met Smooth for the Urban Trail Loop!

My legs are still not fully functioning from Lake Mtn, but it felt great to get out on a no-pressure easy run this morning - especially with GREAT company. I really wish I lived closer to Smooth and could run with her every morning.

The weather was fantastic, except the strong South wind. Except that it blew out the inversion, so I won't complain...too much. Found out later we'd followed Jun's footsteps from a few hours earlier with a mutual friend that I didn't realize was a mutual friend. Such a small running world! :)

Another round of the Urban Trail Loop, but this was an early one with the Newtons - Chad, George and Kimberly. I was working hard to keep up, but managed to get the AP under 9mm. Quite a feat for the way I've felt this past week with these quads! It was nice to have everyone a little sore and worn out.

AP: 8:58 splits: 9:36, 9:20, 8:41, 8:47, 9:03, 8:44, 9:07, 8:26 - I actually felt GOOD at the end and almost went home and ran more...almost.

Went to the gym with Adam after I got kids off to school, because I needed to move again to wake up from my morning nap. We walked the track with the stroller (he is doing lots better, but his cough still doesn't sound good), then I did the bike for a bit - maybe 45 min. Then Sara joined me and we did a good core workout while Adam watched a movie on her phone. Perfect.

More baby in the stroller on the track. The fact that he only got 6.5 hours of sleep didn't seem to phase him at all! ugggghhh.....

So, I pushed him around and around that dumb boring track. Getting old. However, I started running (because I was bored, but you can't run very fast at ALL with the stroller or it shakes like crazy) and noticed that he was starting to fall asleep when I ran...so I kept running. About 30 minutes later he was finally asleep! I enlisted the help of a lady on the spin bike to tell me if he was asleep or not as I passed. Success!

That meant I could do some biking too! Got a good read and some spin time in...about 30 minutes.

I'm SO over this kid being sick! He is feeling better, but sleeping and eating are still slow coming back. Mama is tired.
