Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

First, just let me say NINE glorious hours of sleep!! I was in heaven this morning when I woke up! Little did I know what my body had in store for me...

I had originally planned to back off on a long run this weekend and do my tri class at the rec center and just 8-10 miles total. With the past 2 days off I've been itching to not see my weekly miles in the 20s, so I changed plans. Thank goodness for beautiful, wonderful, inspirational Toby who was willing to put up with my whining for another week.

Met Kim, Scott, Rob and Toby at the JRP and we headed South first to Bluffdale to get the 'bump' over with. I felt decent on the run and was having a good time just plugging along visiting. Even the way back felt okay - wind at our back and things were good. Only problem? We were only at mile 7. By mile 10 I was exhausted, it felt rather SGM-ish, plugging along all my mental energy to just put one foot in front of another. Crap, I was exhausted! I was breathing SUPER hard and could hardly talk while just pulling 9:30ish miles, what was wrong with me?

Well, thanks to Toby I pushed through and turned around at mile 11 - only 4 left to get back to the car. Four is easy, stop in one mile and get a drink at Mulligans and gu and I can get through this. I did my best to stay mentally strong, but I think poor Toby was more than aware that I was ready to kill over at any given second.

The last 3 miles I made us stop every mile so that I could just catch my breath and recover enough to go on. Toby's water belt and her good attitude saved me! Eyes could hardly focus, plodding along, head spinning, side aches, I just wanted to lay down and curl up in fetal position until someone came back to get me.

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger! right? Well, I wasn't dead and I knew I had to get back to the car. Pushed through the last 1.15 without stopping and I was done. Hallelujah! I seriously have never felt so crappy, except during SGM this last year. I did it though. I didn't care if my AP was 12mm, I'd finished and that was the biggest plus for me! I wasn't dead, so I was stronger!

After thinking about it, I THOUGHT that 2 days off (even with little/no sleep) would make this run amazing, but I forgot one thing...I've been with a sick baby. Just like before SGM, I think my body is fighting an internal battle I can't see or feel. No fever or anything (adults don't really get symptoms, but are carriers), but my body knows it is fighting hard and when I try to push myself through a long run like this I just fall apart. This is probably one reason why although I've done nothing but sit for the past 2 days I didn't feel like I WANTED to do anything. No walks, no nothing. I was fine just sitting around. My body is sick and fighting, it just can't tell me that. So, I push it hard and it pushes back by making me feel like death while I run. So, like I said - I'm not dead, so I must be stronger for this one!

I was surprised our AP was as low as it was since I felt like I was dragging through mud the majority of the time. Faster than last week, but felt 10X harder! The best news is that even now my foot feels pretty darn stinkin' good. Not 100% for sure, but I'll take the 80% better it feels. I'm proud of myself for making it through this run and I'm SO grateful I had Toby to drag me along, I'm really not sure I would've made it otherwise - at least without crying :) Thanks Toby - I owe you, BIG time!

AP: 9:15, splits: 8:50, 9:15, 9:33, 9:24, 9:12, 9:18, 9:04, 8:41, 9:04, 9:13, 9:22, 9:11,  9:44, 9:33, 9:23.

I am so proud of you for pushing through Rachel. We can all relate to runs like this but I think conquering them makes us so mentally strong. Good job at being tough and not giving up.

I hope you and the baby feel better soon.

Rachel ~ I ditto what Rachelle said! WAY to battle through the tough (both mentally and physically) miles. Yes, you are getting stronger...just be sure to take good care of yourself. Your body has been through a lot. Hope you get some well deserved rest/sleep and get better. Love you! :)

So GREAT to have Toby's company. I miss you girls SO MUCH!!!

Sometimes you gotta just get through the tough runs! An 80% better foot is great progress too. Good job today - I wanna be seeing 9 hours of sleep every night!

I wouldn't have made those 15 miles without you today! We were quite the sight :) But it is over. The miles are logged. The memories are made. The guy in orange has been caught. Warm yucky bathroom water drank. Porn star guys talked about. Really....could we ask for more...we are training for Ragnar???? :) Thanks for pulling me through today! Get ready to ROCK Spectrum!

okay...so I really feel bad that i didn't realize you were about to fall off the path! Way to push through and then keep going right on past us! :)

Great job...now rest up!

Good job, Rachel!!! It sounded way tough, but you DID IT!!!

From Bec on Sun, Mar 11, 2012 at 15:57:12 from 68.206.133.141

This is such a beautiful entry Rachel. I know that you had a really tough time battling this run but it is a sure sign that you are well on your way! There was no foot pain, you were out running with a sweet friend, and you pushed through something that the rest of us probably would have stopped at.

Get some rest, feel better, and start jamming at the gym again. In a a couple of weeks you will be able to run that without a problem PLUS more. :) Hold some high standards for yourself at Ogden, you really can do it!

From Chad on Mon, Mar 12, 2012 at 08:20:55 from 168.177.153.27

Good job sticking it out. You did awesome. Let me know about some these runs so I can get drug along too and venture away from my beloved JRP.

From RAD on Mon, Mar 12, 2012 at 09:25:03 from 98.202.23.178

Thanks everyone. I had a wonderful afternoon with the family in the yard and eating BYU cake :) (long story...my funny 4 year old!). I'm not sure it made me any physically stronger, but it certainly made me mentally stronger, and my poor husband had to keep hearing me sing the one line: "what doesn't kill us makes us stronger..." all day. He was sick of it :)
