Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

What a fun filled night and morning. Packet pick up was crazy, but I got to chat and hang with some fun people and thanks to friends only had to spend 30 min in line. Dinner alone with 5 kids and an all you can eat ice cream machine is also exciting :)

Woke up 4AM the next morning to avoid the craziness waiting for buses. I forgot how long it takes to get dressed for a cold run! I was just a few minutes behind schedule, but Kelli and I still got on the first bus up to the top.

I nearly puked on the ride (lights inside the bus were left on and I get sick and hate the bus anyway!), I mean seriously almost puked. I was just glad it was a nice bus with a bathroom. I almost got up and ran in, but I decided to try to cool down first. Ripped off the pink wig, jacket and gloves. It gave me enough relief to make it until the bus stopped....about a mile up the road from where it should have. Being inside a bus turning around on the alpine loop is, well, a tad frightening. Then, as we headed down 4 other buses were headed up in the wrong direction. Being inside a bus on the alpine loop while another bus is trying to pass in the other direction is simply terrifying! Kelli and I both thought we were going to die or were in for a true Halloween nightmare! Good times :) I think it only took about 2 of the 3 hours waiting for my stomach to finally settle down.

Sat in the tent and wasted away the next 3 hours chatting with Steph, Heather, Kelli, Allie and James as our small spot of real estate was slowly encroached by the influx of runners constantly streaming in. Met Walter at 8 to do the pacer run down, then found the secret passage back into the tent so we didn't have to fight the masses to get warm :)

As we lined up for the race, it was fun to feel the excitement and have the people who lined up with us (1:50) ready for a good race. We warned them that we would be running course specific paces, and to not go out too fast. Then, we were off.

It was great to see how 4 pacers all had a little different info streaming into their garmins mile after mile, but we'd just kind of take an average and we were always close. Except sometimes, then we just went with the one that was most right...which was usually Kelli :) I think we only had one girl hang with us the whole time and she was a trooper! Most people used us a benchmark "are you still the 1:50 pacer?" they'd ask as we'd run by "no, we decided mid-race to change to a 1:40." really?!? yes, the pink haired tall lady is "still" a 1:50 pacer. The last mile I would tell people struggling "you got this! Stay in front of 1:50, don't let the clock beat you!" I just loved being able to push and encourage people! It was hard at the end not to get the 'horse into the barn' feeling and start picking up the pace. We had to stay steady, but everyone around us was picking it up. Definitely the hardest part!

The finish chute was bad, spectators crowding the small trail and Kelli and I kept telling people to sprint and to go, but you could hardly get around anyone. I asked the spectators to move back a little, and most responded...at least while I was going by. I tried to hug the side, but still just felt like I was in the way.

At 13.1 on the garmin the time said 1:50:02 - perfection! It's not my fault the course was long at 13.2 and we finished 1:50:40 total time, but still perfection if you ask me. We hit all the paces within seconds of the prescribed time on the wristbands, and it worked out great. AP: 8:23, right on the nose. Kelli really needs to take credit for this one, she is an EXCELLENT pacer - I just might have to hire her to get me to hit my BQ next year! You do work for food still, don't you? :)

Helped unload the rock sacks, oh, uh I mean drop bags, from the truck - but only until mine came out and then Kelli and I left. We'd had enough Halloween 'fun' to last us a whole 'nother year!

This race is always fun when it is said and done with, but it is getting crowded and more disorganized as the years go on. I'll probably still run it, because I love the shirts and medals and the fun to be had, but I hope they can get their act together next year...might be asking too much. Thanks Kelli for letting me tag along today and thanks to Walter for letting me help out, definitely the way to run this race! All the craziness doesn't feel so bad when you didn't have to pay :)

Walking around with sore quads and calves today - thank you 13 miles of downhill for that one. All the dancing I did at the Halloween party later helped work some of it out I'm sure!

You did fantastic!!! Way to go, Rachel!!! I've read a lot of the same descriptions of the mayhem with packet pickup and other things. Hopefully they can get it together next year.

Excellent job Rachel, You did a much better job hitting your marks than we did. We had an excitable pacer with us that kept wanting to run ahead, we needed to tie a rope around his waist to slow him down.

WOW!!! Sounds like a real party!!! The early bus ride and waiting at the start tent will come in handy when you run Boston...yep, three hours to kill at Hopkinton! Except there would not be any scary bus turnaround ride and crazy mayhem...BAA knows how to host a world class event for 25,000 athletes. Sorry to get off the subject...but you did mention hiring Kelli to pace you to a BQ! :) :) :)

EXCELLENT pacing job Rachel, err tall lady with pink hair. Dang! I missed out on a fun fun time. I definitely would've loved to run in your 1:50 group! :) :) :) :) :)

Nice job Rachel. It sound like you really enjoy being a pacer.

Good job on the half! I really wanted to run this race! That is until I realized about a month ago that my max was probably going to be 4-6 miles at a time for the next 6.5 months. :) But that's just fine. :) It's interesting to hear that it's getting disorganized. I'm not surprised! Hopefully like you said it will get better because I'd like to do it sometime.

Good job on all your workouts! And the ones at the gym are really impressive!!

Devine, 500 commando points for paying it forward, what the heck, sounds brutal wait for the start. Are some people stupid? Spectators, always worry about hitting one and biting the dust.

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

You and Kelli just love to run, pace, run all night, all day, just run you two with forest.

From RAD on Mon, Oct 31, 2011 at 23:40:20 from 98.202.23.178

Dale, I think next year will be a do or die for this race.

Rob, I think I was the one that needed the leash those last few miles, but I'd just wait for master Kelli :) I also like to walk through aid stations so I'd pull a little ahead before each one so I could actually drink - excuses, really.

Smooth, you would've loved it! Well, not the crazy stuff, but the race is good and we had a great time!!

Nancy, it was a good time!! I really like when I'm not racing a race to pace - gives me purpose to go 'slow' :)

Brooke, you should put it on the calendar for next year!! It is a fun race, you just have to learn to wade through the disorganization.

Brent, yeah, you could definitely tell they weren't runners or they'd be pulling themselves back when it started to get crowded. I think I could run all day and night with Kelli :)

I wish I could have run this with you guys. I've get to get my miles up. It sounds like a lot of fun despite all the organization craziness. Nice job hitting the 1:50 time right on.

From flatlander on Tue, Nov 01, 2011 at 16:53:11 from 198.207.244.102

Excellent pacing job. I don't like bus rides either, I will do anything possible to avoid them. The diesel fumes always seem to leak into the cabin.

From calliej on Tue, Nov 01, 2011 at 21:21:59 from 97.126.131.38

It was fun to see you run by!! Maybe I will be able to stick with you next time!
