Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Okay, a few lessons learned before TOU

A: I need to MASTER those ITBands and tape them and take aleve before a marthon - or just cut them out of my body :)

B: I need longer faster/tempo runs in my repotoire, most long runs are at an easy pace. I need to start pushing the speed there if I ever want to BQ

C: it is SO much nicer to stay NEAR the race and not have to wake up at 3 in the morning! AND to stay with amazing, wonderful, supportive, kind, generous and nice people :)

The worst news is that this was to be my confidence booster that after 3 months of doing ITB exercises that I could finish the distance with no issues...no so. They went out just before mile 20, but thanks to a wonderful support staff (Smooth and Bec you seriously have NO idea how much your love, patience, kindness and support meant to me during those next couple miles!) I was able to pull through and do what I could to finish. I got to be the annoying runner that would run fast then walk, run fast then walk. I just wanted to finish as quickly as possible, but when the ITB would sieze up I had to walk it out for a bit..then I could run again. I did my best to explain it to people as we leap-frogged so I didn't make people too mad :) One lady did ask me in passing "you haven't been doing this the whole race have you?" I laughed, NOPE! short explanation and some sympathetic words and we were good. Finished strong thanks to the motrin kicking in and letting me finally run .25-.5 at a time.

So, I did the bad news first, but I now get to end on the good stuff. I had an amazing race and the miles felt so short! I seriously didn't feel like I'd run a full! Thanks to Smooth's amazing-ness and always on the lookout for the papratizi  (Larry) and hoping to see Becca again (speedy feet!) I just had an amazing day, the miles were good and I felt strong on the hills, even ran up the last hill which is 'honorable' to walk up! I was just feeling those good vibes! I wasn't worried about time, just ran a good pace to be able to talk and still pass people. Even "our friend" Joel FINALLY couldn't keep up :)

The dirt roads were hard and I think made me need more stability than I was used to giving which could've contributed to the ITB - as well as a seemingly constant crown on the road when we were on one. We also took a little 'detour' - there were no signs and the people around us told us the wrong way to go! However, Smooth still ended up short on her Garmin (mine wasn't ready to go at the start so I knew mine would show short). I LOVED seeing Leslie and Maurine, it is SO fun to run with friends...they make it all worth it. Every step, all the pain and all the exhaustion!

It was a beautiful course and my ITB is still a little tender tonight, but I'm hoping to be back at the runs on Tuesday ready to ramp up for and finish strong at TOU next month! A big huge THANK YOU goes to Pres and Mrs Smooth!!!! You two are amazing and thank you SO much for all you did for me this weekend I had the most amazing time ever at a race...next year we need to convince some 1/2 slackers to come party with us! Also, Becca, I had a wonderful time this weekend and am so glad I found you on this blog :) You are one speedy woman and thanks for all your support today...it really meant the world to me!

I will post what splits my Garmin got (it ended short and at 4:18???) when I'm more motivated to get my patootie out of the chair and go get it :) I was pleased to see that despite my even slower time than Ogden I would've finished 9th in my AG (Dale finished 16th in his) and we finished 205/473 overall men and women. Not too shabby Dale...nice work :)

Devine Miss M - marathoning is in your blood. Was the medallion Kool and how was the shirt? Your love of running and running buddies really comes out in your race report. PC is a tough marathon and is difficult to compare to others.

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

Oh my, I am sorry about your stupid ITB!!!!! Sounds like you had a wonderful time with Smooth and Pres. Smooth. They are such cute couple! It was fun to see you guys, at that point you both looked happy and strong.

Get that ITB in shape for TOU!!!!! I wish you the best!!!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 09:41:27 from 24.8.167.243

I'm impressed with the way you are able to learn from both the things that didn't go so well and the things that did go well. And I'm impressed with your ability to RUN!!

I totally agree with you about letter C. I did that with Lori and Marion for the Ogden marathon and it was awesome!

While this did not boost your confidence as much as you wanted it to, I'm sure that TOU will seem easy in comparison.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 09:46:53 from 97.117.63.224

Glad you had a good time. That is a really tough course - but a pretty one. I asked one woman at the mile 18 aid station what happened and she apologized and said some flag people left early and they were calling them back.

From Nancy on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 09:49:17 from 76.27.11.127

Great job Rachel. I'm sorry about the IT band. You still ran it faster than all but one of my marathons.

From Bec on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 12:02:50 from 67.177.35.60

I had such a good time with you, Smooth, and Pres. this weekend. This will go down for as one of my most memorable, "long runs."

I am proud of the strong effort you made yesterday. I know that your ITs are literally a beast, but you were incredibly persistent on your goal. This race is one that did not hold you back in anyway, but it pushed you to be more motivated for your next one. I am so happy that we have met! Running has given me the opportunity to meet some of the most goal driven, motivated, humble, and FUN people. You are no exception!

Nice job on your race! (your second marathon, right?). Park City is such a hard course. Sorry your IT band went out, but better at 20 than at 15, eh? Perhaps you should give it more time off than just two days, like hit the pool and pool run for this week (you don't lose fitness with pool running).

From RAD on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 14:45:25 from 76.27.12.70

Brent, hand blown glass medallion on a colored 'shoe string' not what I'm used to but better in many ways! T-shirt is green, only problem...I ran for a guy and the guys and girls shirts were different. Oh well, I'm still happy with it - plus now I've got a story to tell to those who see it and recognize the difference :)

Leslie, I was feeling GREAT then, plus seeing you made me happy too! It was a beautiful race and the good memories push out the bad ones.

Carolyn, how close are you to Ft Collins? I have a friend that wants to run that 1/2 next year (May, I think?) It would be fun to have you too!! Running parties are the best.

Maurine, It actually wasn't a bad detour and at least we got back on course...after an extra big hill :) It was so fun to 'bump into' you at the race!!

Nancy, That marathon is a beast. Lots of uphills, but thanks to wonderful people like you in the BBK's I've learned to love them :)

Becca, I had a great time too. I'm glad you talked me into doing this race! It was amazing.

Michelle, yes, it's my 2nd and yes, I was glad I only had 6 miles and not 16 like Ogden! I think all the flat/uphill saved me there. The ITB's are actually feeling better today...it's strange, but they don't bother me anytime but on LONG runs (20+) I'm going to call my favorite PT tomorrow and get some advice on how to kick these things to the curb....again!

Thanks all for you kind words and support! I look up to all of you and I love this blog for all the wonderful people I've met and that support me even when it's not a 'perfect' race!!!

Rachel, it was so nice to meet you before and after the race. I was hoping I could see you and some others along the course, but just getting from one point to another to see Amy took up a lot of time. I'm sorry about the IT issues. Hopefully you can get them feeling better for the next one. Are you doing TOU or SGM or both?

From Snoqualmie on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 15:57:03 from 24.18.192.33

One un-lurk deserves another. :) Nice job running under difficult circumstances. Congratulations! Enjoy your recovery.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 20:24:12 from 24.8.167.243

Rachel, I'm about an hour and a half or two hours from Ft. Collins. What race does your friend want to run? It would be awesome if you came to Colorado for a race. I would run it with you for sure.

From RivertonPaul on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 20:39:16 from 75.169.10.192

Sorry about the IT band. Otherwise, way to go.

From RAD on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 21:22:18 from 76.27.12.70

Dale, TOU...didn't put in for St George.

Thanks Sno :)

Carolyn, she wants to do the FT Collins 1/2 in May. I'd love to come too!

Paul, Thanks...I'm sure I've got to get past it sometime!!!

From DonGardinero on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 22:01:53 from 75.162.186.95

Rachel, how are you feeling today?

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 22:05:56 from 71.219.64.200

GREAT JOB RACHEL!!! This is a way slower course than Ogden, so you were actually much faster dearie!!! Sorry to hear that darn IT band acted up. It is the curse to all runners for sure. But take care of it (as I know you are) and you will be awesome at TOU!

From RAD on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 22:09:48 from 76.27.12.70

Dale, much better today! Just a little tenderness on the downstairs. I'm thinking about hitting a few tomorrow.

Kelli, thanks. It was a fun run, and someday I'll find a way to rid humanity of ITBS pain - I swear!!

From Shelly on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 22:49:04 from 24.10.160.70

Nice job finishing marathon #2. I understand PC is a bugger of a course. Get that ITB under control and you will rock top of utah- now you have even more experience to help you through.

From Leandra on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 12:29:57 from 67.41.234.57

Well what can I say but you rock! What a nice "training" run. Sorry about your ITB, and I understand the leap frogging people. I was doing that for the last few miles of my run. You're such a strong runner and I know you'll do great at TOU!

From Merri on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 14:10:43 from 67.199.179.247

nice marathon!!! sorry about the itb, I say cut it out of your body. :) if it works I bet everyone would come to you for your services ha ha

From Smooth on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 19:29:52 from 71.36.70.24

Rachel! It was so fun running with you. I am very impressed with how smart you run (WAY to run patiently those first uphill miles even though I know you could charge up them much much faster...you have some serious speed hidden in those long legs). You did AWESOME for your 2nd marathon in just 3 months. I'm so so so so proud of you for toughing it out the last few miles. We have got to kick that ITB to the curb. You will do GREAT at TOU!!!

From Teena on Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 14:25:40 from 67.177.20.13

A huge congrats!!! How fun to spend so much time with so many cool people AND run a marathon!!! Nicely done.

So sorry about the IT band. How is it today?

From LuzyLew on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 18:40:42 from 208.187.197.42

Great job getting through that monster! I finished UVM in 4:25, and I'll always be glad to have allowed myself that experience. I didn't have an injury though, I hope you'll pull thorugh it ok. I've just signed up for the Onion Days 10K and afterparty hosted by Marion. I hope you'll be able to come. It will be nice, even if we can't fit a run in to see everyone!
