Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Just to start out: I LOVE Onion Days. I picked this race the first year I was 'running' and I've gone back ever since. I love it even more now that I know all the amazing people that live down there!! A big THANK YOU goes to Marion for hosting the big-bad for you breakfast (thanks for the big gut and butt soup - it was FABULOUS, and I now have a big gut and butt :) ) and to Michelle, all the hubby's that cooked and kept us more than full, and everyone that came and brought good food and fun times!!! It was totally worth every calorie bite and every lost minute of sleep on a holiday!

So, the race. Excited and set a time goal: 45 min. I figured if I got a 44:12 at Des News I could push HARD and get a 45:00. I knew this course was flat and not downhill, but I wanted to run my guts out. My mantra today: NO EXCUSES!

Got to say a happy hello to all my fellow RHPC's and bloggers then we lined up. After TOU 1/2, I'd decided I wanted to beat Walter, even if for only a moment. So, I lined up at the start line (no chip times), and when the gun went off I was First!! I held my own through the crowd of 5Kers (about 200 yds), just long enough to be in front of Walter for all the newpaper pictures (hehehe) - if I ever do find a picture of this, I may just photoshop a finish line in front! The good thing about starting in the front, even when you have no business doing so, is that you can count how many women are in front of you. Two passed me quickly, I was in 3rd - not too shabby. A little past mile one the third lady passed me, about a mile later I passed her back, but then about .5 mile later she passed me back and said "you're doing great, thanks for pushing me, I need someone to keep me going!" After that she stayed consistently about 20-30 seconds in front of me. I knew if I just kept pace with her I'd do okay!

I also leap-frogged JonA a few times. It was SO nice to have Kelly there on her bike with updates and encouragement! The last time I passed Jon I said "don't get chicked again!" I meant, don't pass me so I have to pass you back again, I just didn't have enough breath to say it. I thought he was behind me the whole time, but when the guy I thought was him passed me again...it wasn't Jon.

My R shoelace came untied at mile 3 - I didn't have time to stop and tie it. I kept thinking..mile 4 you can stop and tie it...at the aide station at mile 4.5 you can tie it...I don't have time to stop to tie a shoe! Then about mile 4.5 my L shoelace came untied too. I figured I'd run through worse conditions than having loose shoelaces, so I just kept at it and never stopped. I did walk about 5-10 steps through the 4.5 water station, just enough to actually swallow.

After the lead group took off and I hit my REAL pace I was able to pick off a few people, obviously only men. I love to have my 'you've just been pinked' shirt on and then pass the guys!

The SLIGHT up hill miles 4-6 slowed my pace too much, I think I could've made 45 if I would've kept up a little better. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20! I ended up finishing just 20 seconds behind the 3rd place lady and I was hoping that no one in front of me was in my age group. I was VERY pleased when I saw 1st place in my AG on the runnercard; this is the first time I've taken first in my age group! Overall a great race and I felt strong, I just loved having people there cheering me in at the end. I heard Marion yelling my name and it gave me the push I needed to sprint the finish!

Oh, I could go on and on! I loved it, felt good, had a good time, ALMOST got my goal and this is my 2nd best 10K time, so best flat course time! I wish every race could feel this good!

AP: 7:26 splits: 7:04, 7:15, 7:32, 7:22, 7:53, 7:41, (.2) 6:42. This was the most accurate my Garmin has ever been to a course. My time on the Garmin was 46:15 (same as official) and the distance was 6.21 - good tangents :)

Devine - 500 commando points for the 1st place age div. win. Also, what I am more impressed with, your recovery from saturday and able to hold the pace for the 10K, your getting to be one strong RHPC. Always great to chick the guys. Have you ever heard the comment from a guy, your going too fast! The excitement from your race report jumps off the page.

Stay Kool, TOU is yours, B of BS Rools out

I love this report. You are completely back in your game, good girl! What is with the shoe laces today? HAHA, kinda funny. Keep your awesome pace up lady!

From Burt on Mon, Sep 07, 2009 at 20:13:12 from 98.167.151.26

Radical! What I didn't like about the report is that I imagined myself running and getting pinked, which surely would've happened. So phooey on your shirt! But good job nonetheless.

From Nancy on Mon, Sep 07, 2009 at 21:47:43 from 76.27.11.127

Great job Rachel. You are getting sooo fast.

Nice job! Congratulations.

(BTW, if you want to avoid loose laces in the future, check this out: http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/slipping.htm )

From Walter on Mon, Sep 07, 2009 at 22:44:10 from 76.27.15.208

If there is anyone out there that has a pic of Rachel ahead of me at the start, burn it! I cant take the agony of being pinked!

Great race Rachel! When your in the front you have the adrenaline and fear of being passed that keeps you going. Good Job!

From Merri on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 00:24:29 from 67.199.179.247

Nice job!!! 1st in your age group!! You rocked it!

From RAD on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 00:29:40 from 76.27.12.70

Teena, THANKS! I had a great day, hope you can join us next year!! I'm up in a new AD next year...the HARD one, it scares me so I wanted a last hurrah!

Thanks Carolyn...it was all those carbs from this weekend. Too bad I have to drag them around for the next 3 weeks now :)

Brent, I can't wait to hear a guy say that to me! I'd probably just laugh and say "you're going too slow!" well...if I had the breath anyway.

Thanks Dale! It's all due to a great PC training run :)

Becca, LOL! I don't know what was up with them...I just didn't have time to deal with it :) Thanks, hope I hold up as well in a couple weeks....

Burt, I'm sure Marion could find a shirt for you if you'd like, then you can 'pink' the field too! :)

Thanks Nancy!!

Smooth, Thanks for the pics and the wonderful morning! Every day with you is a happy one!! Hope I can make it next week.

Leslie, the big bad breakfast sure was...I think it's still sitting in my gut here 12 hours later! But SOOO worth it! We missed you, hopefully next weekend is just as wonderful :)

Sno, I actually tie my shoes the 'right' way. I've NEVER had a problem with them coming undone before. My hubby even asked "why don't you double knot them when you race?" I've never had issues before, so I don't! I guess I was just running too fast for them today :) Thanks though, I LOVE new suggestions of how to fix things! Got any ITB suggestions?

Walter, I WILL find a pic :) and I actually did kind of enjoy being at the front. I knew where I was in the race, a whole new experience for me! I may have to start out in front of you more often - hehehehe (I'll be the annoying pink sprinter!)

From RAD on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 00:30:33 from 76.27.12.70

Thanks Merri, you'll have to come next year!! It is a GREAT race and even better company! :)

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 10:47:41 from 71.219.97.42

You have already heard it all from me, but I will put it in writing---AWESOME JOB!!!!!!

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 11:25:34 from 24.199.205.252

Let me be the first ---eh make that 20th to congratulate you. How awesome is was just reading your blog. It got my heart racing just to read about your run.

I think your shoelaces must be male..that's why they fell behind & couldn't keep up with you!!

You're doing such a wonderful job with your running. So proud of you!

From Jon A on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 15:44:48 from 67.214.249.195

Good job Rachel. I was happy for you being out there ahead of me. I wish I could have had the legs to push you more, but it wasn't to be. Congrats on a great race.

From marion on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 23:26:54 from 71.213.124.121
