Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

So, let me start with last night. Volleyball was a disaster! Not only do I have to drive 30 miles (I'm only substituting this round), but hubby has to get home early and I miss my kids on family night; however, 2 new girls on the team had spring break this week and decided it wasn't their responsibility to tell anyone OR get substitutes so 4 of us got left high and dry. We were playing a team that was cocky as all get out and well - they think they're all that, but they really don't even play well!

Ugghhh...anyway, on the first play (after an official forfeit and we're just playing for fun) I go up to take a block on an over-set and the setter comes under the net. Well, I land on her foot and twist my ankle. You know when you have so much pain it takes your breath away? Yeah...oh, and it's the same ankle I twisted last month as well! Anyway, I wasn't happy and was doing my best not to just sit and hyper-ventilate and cry! I'm telling you...it wasn't good. Luckily, one of the girls on the team works in a PT office and taped my ankle up so I could deal with it. I got to be the fat  gimpy pregnant lady....SO fun! Anyway, we called it off for the second game and just left. My neighbor I play with, Amy, and I went to Chili's afterward to drown our sorrows/frustrations in chips and salsa. VERY therapeutic!

So, needless to say - anytime I rolled over or the sheets pulled my foot last night I awoke in pain. Another restless night. Before getting out of bed, I wrote the alphabet with my ankle hoping it would move :) I could hardly walk on it, but was determined! I just needed to get it moving.

The gym has body sculpting and I knew it wouldn't be a ton of work on the ankle so I went, but moving a bit really helped loosen up the ankle; however it was still pretty painful to walk on it. So, I went to the TM afterward hoping I could just walk 30 minutes on an uphill grade. After 10 minutes I thought I'd try just a couple minutes of running.

Once it got moving it felt pretty good...lets go for 5 minutes....okay a full mile....hmmm, feeling good....lets do 2....TM is going to stop at 2.5 I'll stop then....stops at 2.6, let's just finish 3....feeling GREAT don't want to stop....okay one more....okay, okay, I'll stop.

I seriously got going and just felt GREAT. It's the first time since I've gotten back that I just found my rhythm and felt like I could go and go and go. If it wasn't for already being 15 minutes over day care time I may have gone more!

I'm pretty sure the trick was starting slow. My first mile was 9:50, then 9:40, the third I did the majority at 9:30, but bumped up the last .25 to 8:49 so I'm assuming it was a 9:20, feeling so good I took it up to 9:05 for the first 1/2 of the 4th mile, then went faster each tenth until ending at an 8:00mm. I still just felt GREAT!

The ankle was painful, but worth it :) The rest of the body felt great and the pain subsided (or I just got really good at ignoring it). It is still tender and I'm icing it now, but I am on such a high about running 4 straight (except the stop/start at 2.6) I'm just happy!! After a run like today I KNOW I'll be good by April to run the SLC 1/2!! Hopefully, I'll feel as good, but not have a gimpy ankle :) Also, next week I'll be heading back to the BBK's (in the back of course!)!!

My heart skipped a beat when I read your entry. Way to have an awesome run! You go girl!

From KP on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 14:34:03 from 65.208.22.25

Another volleyball player! Awesome! And, playing pregnant!?!??! Even more awesome! I don't know that I'd have the courage to do that...

Hopefully your ankle is now back to normal.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 14:34:16 from 24.8.167.243

Well, your entry started out with bad news, but ended with good news. So things are looking up! Congratulations on 4 whole miles. I do much better when I start slowly too.

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 14:40:56 from 67.172.229.125

Callie, sorry about the missed beat :) I'll make it up to you somehow!

KP, LOVE volleyball. It's a rec team and they don't let me dive now :) Who knows...after last night I may not get to block either!

Carolyn, I think the ankle will be hanging around for a bit, but I am excited about the 4! I WILL be starting slower now.

From Brent on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 14:57:26 from 168.178.30.194

Devine - holy cow, without Harry - a series of unfortunate events - limitiy sneckins - see you at the SLC half, I will not be wearing the du rag this year, look for the guy with the goatee. Hey, we may be about the same pace for a few miles, may try and keep up with you.

Stay Kool, Spike her in the noggen next time, B of BS Rools out

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 15:27:05 from 67.172.229.125

Brent, Maybe I'll wear the do-rag :) Still looking for good t-shirt sayings for the pregnant run! Oh, and I'm already devising a way to substitute with the team when they play the 'crazies' again!! I did get a couple good shots in. Gave 'em a little smack down - even with 4 on 6! :)

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 15:48:01 from 24.199.205.252

RAD-

someone's got to say it: You need to let your injuries heal. Pushing on an injury can make it worse. You know that. (now picture me getting off the soap box)

That being said, I'm glad you felt great and got some therapy at Chili's.

I agree with the Old Goat- spike her in the head next time.

T-shirt Idea: "I'm not the one with the Goatee"

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 16:00:11 from 67.172.229.125

QP- I was wondering who would be brave enough to say it :) However, I really did hit the TM with full intention of just walking - I SWEAR! But when the ankle started feeling better I just kept changing my mind.

Oh...you know what the girl said while I was writhing in pain on the floor? "what happened?" "did she STEP on my foot?" DUH!! HELLO?!? Who doesn't know when someone LANDS on your foot?? I didn't STEP on your foot! YOUR foot went UNDER the net and I LANDED ON IT! If you couldn't feel that you deserve to have your head spiked on!! (still a little bitter...sorry) Oh, yes and there was never a 'sorry' or an 'are you okay?' yeah...they deserve more than a spike in the head!!

hehehe...with that shirt I'd be SURE to find the old goat :)

From Calvin on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:04:10 from 66.133.117.3

Rachel you always have the best stories.

I hope your twisted ankle gives you no more problems.

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:09:02 from 67.172.229.125

Cal, I've considered becoming a professional story teller - really :) My husbands says I can make any 20 second story last an hour!

From allie on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:23:46 from 67.177.0.102

wow, scary story! i am glad your ankle is okay (or at least runnable!) and i am glad you were feeling so great on your run today. maybe i will see you on saturday?!?

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:27:48 from 67.172.229.125

Thanks Allie! I finally feel it coming back some. Oh, I will be there! I'll make sure to have your 'special' water ready at mile 5! :)

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:41:01 from 71.219.89.155

YEAH....I saw that long post and thought maybe i missed the ambulance at the gym or something! I am so glad the damage was not too bad and that you got in that awesome run!!!!

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:57:23 from 174.23.198.220

You had me worry about the twisted ankle at volley ball. Seriously how many pregnant lady would play team volleyball? Glad it didn't do too much damage and you had a wonderful 4 miler. GOOD LUCK at SLC 1/2!

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 18:04:21 from 67.172.229.125

Kelli, sorry for the worry. Again, it's my story-telling talent :) Keeps me entertaining on a long run though.

Smooth, volleyball is easy to play pregnant - basketball though I will avoid! I'm hoping the 'Boston rejects' run aka SLC 1/2 goes well too :)

From LuzyLew on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 19:51:22 from 208.187.197.42

Ohh, that ankle couldn't have felt good. I know what you mean about taking your breath away. I whine about a lot of stuff, but when something serious happens, I'm silent. Chips and Salsa was a great remedy!

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 22:59:05 from 67.172.229.125

Thanks Paul! A smile to go a mile...or 4 :)

Luz, I'm glad someone knows what I'm talking about - it's not a good feeling! and YES the chips & salsa were GREAT! :)

From Bec on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 01:22:04 from 76.23.55.210

What a story! Only you. I am glad to hear that you were doing just fine running slowly today. Please be careful or else you will have take another 15 weeks off of running!

From Nancy on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 08:17:27 from 76.27.19.206

I'm sorry about the ankle sprain and the volleyball game. I was very surprised that you were able to run. Great job!!

From RAD on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 13:59:14 from 67.172.229.125

Becca, fun things happen to everyone else too, I'm just the only sucker that tells everyone about it :) I am being careful - promise! I remember what it's like to NOT run, I won't push it!

Nancy, thanks - I'm just glad its over now and that I could run on the ankle as well!

From MrsFIT on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 14:00:48 from 205.127.241.18

I don't know about you but sometimes a sprain is worse than a break - be patient and let it heal.

From RAD on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 15:43:29 from 67.172.229.125

honestly never thought about that - dang, I better take a once over on point tenderness to make sure. Thanks Kristi!

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 15:48:26 from 24.199.205.252

Hey storyteller... here's one for you:

I'll tell you a story of Jack Lenore.

And now my story's begun.

I'll tell you another of Jack and his brother.

And now my story is done.
