Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Well, I certainly didn’t set out to hit a near PR, I just wanted to see what my legs would do. I couldn’t even remember after I saw my time if it was a PR or not (I didn’t know seconds, only 44). I’ve heard PR’s are only good for 2 years, so I guess a near match 2 years later isn’t too bad. Not to mention this course certainly isn’t as easy as Des News, it’s still a good downhill course – until mile 3 J

Best part of the race was that I got on the first bus and got a fresh porta potty at the start! That has never happened to me, you gotta revel in small victories. Rode up with some fun girls and got to visit with Brent and Sylvie for a minute before a short warm-up. I did .6 up the canyon then turned around and came back down. Oh man, I knew then I was gonna love the downhill!

After the warm-up I found Matt, Brooke, Teena and Ryan. I was happy to have finally found them! I was getting worried I wouldn’t get to see them before the race. We dropped our bags and then headed to the start with just minutes before the start.

I just kept up with the crowd the first mile, and true to form I didn’t check my garmin for speed or distance – I just ran what felt good. The first three miles were just amazing and I felt strong even on some of the rolling uphills…then we hit Ivins. The hills really weren’t hills much at all, but after the strong drop downhill the flat made turnover quite a bit harder. At one point I thought about how slow my pace was, but I told myself “no one is passing you, so everyone is slowing pace. As long as you keep with the  crowd and don’t get passed you have NO reason to get down on yourself!” I was able to hold strong and then we hit the final downhill push which I knew was a turn onto Main St and then just the .2  to the finish.

On the downhill I had a couple catch me and just pass me. Well, I’d had enough – I was going to keep up with them/her and then push to finish. There was also a girl in front of me I’d been reeling in for about a mile and I was going to beat her! Well, these 2 ladies (the guy from the couple dropped back at about .2 to go) certainly had a push too. I tried and pushed out all I could, but we all crossed the finish in one big group! After seeing the finishing results I wish I would’ve pulled out just a little more push…just a little! 10 seconds faster would’ve taken me from 7th place  to 4th place – within shooting range of the podium in my AG is AMAZING for me! Oh well, I really don’t feel bad about it and as the day draws on my legs are telling me they left it all on the road!

AP: 709

Splits: 6:21 (thank you downhill!), 7:15 (realizing I need to back off a bit to survive), 7:06 (cruising on), 7:21 (honestly surprised with the uphill encountered here), 7:31 (the worst/slowest uphill for me), 7:39 (flat and bad brain talk, but brought myself back), 6:15 for the last .2 push to outrun those ladies!

I was pleasantly surprised to see the 44 on the clock! Teena came in just behind me and after exchanging short stories and seeing Matt’s amazing finish time we took off back to grab Brooke and Ryan. I ran Brooke in and my legs were so shot I couldn’t keep up with her on her surge to the finish! Had a great chat with everyone as we grabbed some goodies, drop bags and saw results then Teena and I took off for 7.5 cool down miles @ 9:13AP

Got a nice tour of Ivins and then ran the last 3 miles of the course again, and those ‘hills’ really weren’t all that bad the second time around! Teena was still running strong, but I’d pooped out and she had to drag me through those last couple, but I certainly don’t regret it! What a wonderful morning, the wind stayed away until the cool-down miles and I had great company during the race and cool-down.  Now I get to spend the rest of the weekend veggin’ out with the family, I just wish it was WARM!!

YAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!! 7.5mile cool down...really...after a race like that :) Way to go Rachel! You totally deserve that PR - you've been working so hard!

From RAD on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 00:10:51 from 208.88.9.225

Toby, thanks! I had a wonderful morning and I just couldn't let a Saturday go by without a 'long' run. Oh, and I missed the PR by just a few seconds, but it was awfully close!

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 00:31:43 from 67.2.72.18

AWESOME race any way you look at it!!! I could never run that many cool down miles after a near PR race! My legs would usually go into spasms! Not to mention I finsih so late that hubby would have a fit if I stay to run some more! LOL!!!

So happy you had a fun time! Puts a smile on my face picturing you run Brrooke in and running with Teena afterwards!

CONGRATS on a great race! Enjoy your R & R in sunny SG! You deserve it!!!

From watchmerun on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 00:31:59 from 74.211.23.199

Great run, Rachel! Keep up the good work and breaking 3:30 should be a walk in the park.

From steve ash on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 00:43:04 from 67.166.103.179

That's way cool Rachel! Too bad.. Only 10 seconds? Oh well next time I'm sure it'll get closer up there for you:)

From RAD on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 00:53:26 from 208.88.9.225

Smooth, I did have a great morning, but we did miss you! The cool down miles were nice and easy and Teena was nice to go slow and drag me along :)

Matt, I sure hope so! It may have to wait for me to drop my 15 pounds of nursing weight I can't lose, but I hope to see it by the end of the year.

Steve, I was only shooting for a 45 min race, so going sub that was wonderful for me! When I hit my 10K PR I was those 15 pounds lighter and I felt like I was in better shape, so hopefully after I'm done being a nursing mom I can blast out an ever better/truer PR.

Rachel~

You did AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! I kept hoping to catch up with you ... but there was no way!!!

Congrats on an awesome race. I can't wait to see what this year has in store for you. :)

From RAD on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 01:09:42 from 208.88.9.225

Teena, you are so sweet! I was so impressed with how strong you finished those 7 cool down. I was SO spent and dragging and you were ready for 10 more! I'm so impressed with your strength and consistency. Thanks for making those cool down miles so wonderful! I had a great time running with you. Enjoy your week down here!

How fun. Nice job. Racing this early in the year...I have yet to do it.

Nice work Rachel! I can't believe you never checked your watch, but yet got such a great time. This WAS a hard course, you should be very proud of your time! Thanks again for running with me at the end, it really helped! :) Oh, and it was good to finally meet you in person!

From Nancy on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 09:17:43 from 76.27.19.206

Great race Rachel. That is a very good time. When I finish a race and look at all the times I always think if I'd only run a minute or two faster I could have beaten a lot of people. When I'm running I just want to make it to the end. Congratulations you are awesome///////11

Great Race Ms. RAD - A PR is a PR, is a PR, is a PR!!!! Hey doesn't this race get you into The ST. Geo Marathon 2011?

PPPPPP!

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 18:22:54 from 71.219.97.85

Can you have a cool down that is longer than the race????

Nice job, Rachel. You are in GREAT shape and will have a GREAT year!

From Bonnie on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 19:53:02 from 64.119.33.134

Great race Rachel!! Especially since Des News is probably the most downhill 10K in the world -- coming that close to your time in a not-downhill course is wonderful! You rock big-time!

From Brent on Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 20:27:10 from 76.8.201.223

Devine Miss M, always good to see you, very nice race, you have that killer instinct, and cool down after, your right on track for a great racing season. 300 commando points for the PR.

Congrats on a superb race RAD! I hope your weekend was lots of fun & you got the vacation in you were looking for.

Warm will come, it always does. Enjoy the cool while you can :-)

Glad you had a fresh port a potty!

Rachel, WAY TO GO!! look at that first mile!! and you held out strong. So hard to fight your own mental demons in a race!! Happy DAY!! : D.

From Rossy on Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 11:48:39 from 167.138.234.20

Awesome race RAD!!! I like the 7.5-mile cool down. Also, you are running a 44-min 10k and it's still March. You have a fast year ahead of you!

From Burt on Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 11:57:00 from 72.223.90.79

You are way faster than me. Great job!

From RAD on Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 15:37:42 from 67.172.229.125

Lily, thanks. I hope someday that a 7:09 is as effortless for me as it is for you!

Brooke, it was great to meet you too! I can't look at my watch, it plays too many head games with me. I just have run what I feel.

Nancy, retrospect in a race always messes with me too!

Walter, I just need to find a race small enough :)

Carina, thanks! I might be able to keep up with you for a mile now :)

Slic, yup! runners series is done now and I'm looking forward to October now!

Bill, I would love to, but due to time constraints with 'work' I will most likely be unable to come.

Kelli, maybe I should just call it extra miles? :) Thanks Kelli! I'm SO excited to see your strong finish next week!!

Bonnie, well, the first 3 miles is pretty downhill, almost like Des News. It just doesn't continue from there on out! Thanks though, I had a great time and besides some sore muscles feel good today!

Brent, I tried to find you afterward as well, but must've missed you in the shuffle! I guess I've got the instinct, now I just need the legs to go with it! :)

QP, Warhol definitely made the weekend for me! :) It was a good time, just cold - I guess I'm just horrible because I hate it. I want warm! a bit impatient too.

Julie, Thanks! I knew my first mile had been fast, but I didn't realize how fast until I saw splits. I tried rationalizing a 'failure' speech about the classic blunder of starting too fast on a downhill race (about mile 5 as I was struggling), but I'm glad it never had to materialize :)

Rossy, thanks! I hope I can get faster, but sometimes I worry that I'm topped out. I'll keep pushing though, no reason to stop now!

Burt, Whatever! I think you have a sub 45 min 10K in you - You just need an opportunity to do it! Come run Deseret News 10K here in Utah on July 24th, big holiday time! I'll race ya :)

From Bec on Tue, Mar 22, 2011 at 15:07:21 from 204.113.165.114

Look at that PACE!!! Awesome job Rachel. I am happy that you had a great race in you for the weekend. A lot of solid miles to go along with it as well. Did you get my card? HEHE... Couldn't help sending that to you.

Congrats on your race. I love how you pushed it hard at the finish. Way to stay strong on the hills. See, you would be fine on Grandeur.

AWESOME job Rachel!!! I love you race reports! Always the best at details! ;)
