Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Sorry for numbers and no report. I was on my husband's phone and you can't do an entry on the phone. So, you got the good news...with no news :)

I was nervous...definitely nervous. Knowing my paces lately I was sure I had a 1:50, and a 1:48 seemed reachable, I honestly didn't think I'd not only hit my 1:45 but exceed it. I was VERY happy with the race!

This morning my sweet baby slept for 7 hours! The longest he has slept continuously in MONTHS! Thank you sweet boy. I got out of the hotel around 8:15ish and grabbed a banana, half a bagel and a water bottle on my way out. Ran the mile to the convention center so I didn't have to wake up the family. Good thing too! Traffic was SO bad getting there, I'm sure it was faster to take a warm-up mile.

I got there and started seeing all the great runners around! Ran into Michelle L and I said to her "you're running? crud! now I have NO chance of winning!" Hahaha, always fun to dream :) Had a good chat with her and then went off to the crowds. Smooth, Kelli, Wendy, Becca, Don, Lowell, most every BBK I know and more! I love having a race with SO many running friends, makes it all so much more fun.

As the race started I was with Becca and I was nervous, SO nervous! Just go for it, Rachel...Just go for it. Leave it all on the road.

I felt good as we took off and the first mile flew by, afterward I could see the hills we ran up, but I didn't notice anything until mile 3 - which is a good thing for me. About mile 4ish a couple guys were talking about their pace. I tried not to listen. I HATE knowing how fast I'm running, it plays head games with me. 7:38...wow? really? I'm feeling okay :)

It was a good course with the hills small enough that I felt like I could push and tackle them. The only thing I hated was there were many 'tight' turns...like a U turn. I feel like I pretty much have to stop to turn and it pulls down my pace, because I don't come out of the turn as fast as I go in.

Took a GU at mile 5, then you pass the finish and go for your second loop. I was still feeling pretty good and the GU definitely helped put some energy back in the tank. I saved my caffeine GU for a boost at mile 9 and then at 11 I took a swig of gatorade, and that was it for the race.

The worst mile for me by far was 12. I looked at my watch and saw I was at 1:35, I could blow the last mile and still hit my goal! YIPEE! So, I think my pace eased and mentally I started checking out. About mile 12.25 Michelle L was running back on the course and as she passed she shouted “Nice job Rachel! You got this, stay strong!” I thought about it and realized I needed to stay strong. If I can easily hit a 1:45, why not see what I CAN do? Why lower my ability to my goal? I need to stay strong, I’ve got Michelle to answer to now.

At about  12.5 I was breathing SO hard, I had to keep reminding myself to keep it under control. I heard Kelli’s famous line in my head: “you’re not breathing that hard” – I knew I’d be able to tell her that I certainly WAS breathing hard!  I swear people thought I was having a heart attack. As we turned off the path and headed toward the finish I was catching the only guy around me and I heard someone behind me. Crud! I couldn’t handle another person passing me right now. As he caught up he said “just stay with me.” No way! Some strange guy saw me struggling and was here to help me, wonderful luck of the draw!! Right afterward I saw Becca coming back to run me in, I knew if I just stayed with these two I could do it.

I rounded the corner to the finish chute and had that last pull to the finish. I was EXSTATIC when I saw that I had crossed in 1:42. I’d done it, not only met but exceeded my expectations. I CAN do this. My PR is 1:40 on a downhill course and I was carrying about 15 pounds less than I’ve got on me right now. So, I think I now will have to shoot for a 1:35 on a good downhill course – onward and upward!

After I finished I could barely talk and when people would ask how I did, I would just shove my watch in their face. The water/Gatorade was hidden, I couldn’t find it! Finally got some liquid and cooled down. Again got to chat with SO many wonderful people, not only the ones I saw at the start, but also found Julie C, Brent, Walter some of Lowell’s friends and most importantly Dale! Stayed for the awards and won a few good prizes too! Bonus for staying late :)

Had a wonderful day and I feel good, well GREAT about my performance. Not good enough that I think I had something left to give, I’ll be feeling this one. BUT, oh it feels good :)

AP: 7:55 splits….yet to come. Haven’t looked and can’t download them until I get home.

**A little update, okay the AP from the race is off your gun time, so mine is actually a little bit faster :) Here are the updated AP and splits:

AP: 7:50 splits: 7:48, 7:45, 7:30, 7:36, 7:41, 8:01, 7:49, 7:54, 8:01, 8:04, 7:45, 8:09 (last GU/water stop), 7:59, 7:25 (last .1)

I'm really excited about how many sub 8 miles are in there and that even with water stops the slowest mile was an 8:09. Man, I still feel good about this :)

Another fun thing I like to do is figure out my percentile - so I was in the top 13% of all women and 14% of my age group. Please do note that my age group is the biggest AND the top five finishers are all IN my age group...have I complained enough yet about how I hate the 30-34 age group?

Awesome run time! You're back to your pre-baby times already :-)

Looking forward to reading all about it & how you ended up with 14 miles.

Great job sister-blister!

Finally got the report up! Enjoy...especially if you have time to burn :) It's long, just like most of my entries!

Congrats on your race and with reaching and beating your goal. All of your hard work is paying off. Saweeet!

From RAD on Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 23:36:23 from 166.128.198.40

Catherine, it sure was!! WAS being the operative word :)

Jun, thanks - perfect running weather helped.

Burt, glad you enjoyed it :) I'm a woman of few words -HAHAHAHA

Marion, thanks lady! Enjoy the report.

Allie, way too many details posted...and some I left out. I'm a good story teller...what can I say?

Maurine, I know - the report was a little long, so I changed it up :)

Nancy, thanks. It was hard, but well worth it!

QP, I was excited about the time! Now I'm excited to see what I can do after dropping 15 'baby' pounds and with some speed training. The extra mile was just getting there, let the family sleep.

From Burt on Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 23:48:12 from 72.223.84.236

That wasn't too long. Way to stay strong. You definetely don't want to let Michelle down.

Are you surprised I read the whole thing?

From RAD on Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 23:53:53 from 166.128.198.40

Scott, thanks! I'm really excited to see what the next challenge brings :) WIRE?

Burt, you better have read the whole thing! I don't write these things for me :) Thanks, it wasn't easy, but it was really worth it - especially now that I'm done!

By the way, you forgot to mention that you saw me! : ^{)

From Maurine/Miles on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 10:07:00 from 97.117.70.62

Way to go Rachel! And push yourself. You are going to have an awesome year racing. Think I might try this race next year.

From Tom Slick on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 10:09:59 from 69.171.160.71

Very good Ms. RaD. Just think what you could have done with more good ol' two lane black top training. Hey what happened to my earlier post? At any rate, congrats on a run well done. Now make sure that you get your sleep and continue to train with earnest, 5 days a week. Take a multi-vitamin with zinc, Vit C, so you don't catch a cold!!!!

From Nancy on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 17:03:10 from 76.27.19.206

Wow Rachel. I was looking at the times for the other people that come to our group on a regular basis and you bet them all by a long way. Great job!!!

From Twinkies on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 17:16:24 from 24.2.82.73

Way to go Rachel. You set a high goal and then you smashed it.

From Kelli on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 21:15:30 from 71.219.84.215

GREAT RACE RACHEL! I knew you could do it.

From RAD on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 21:16:06 from 67.172.229.125

Teena, thanks! It was a wonderful weekend, made better by a successful effort!

Carina, Now I know I can keep up with you for a mile :)

Dale, YIKES! You are SO right! Honestly when we were chatting I was a tad dazed and confused. There were people coming and going and coming and going (not to mention I was introduced to about 10 people before or after the race) and I'm sure I missed a few others as well. Not that I'm making excuses, but I am sorry!! We did have a lovely chat, thanks for saying hello!!

Maurine, the race was 'meh' but the company and warm weather were divine!

Slick, already on it - most of it :) I can't wait for spring to catch some more black top and focused training.

Nancy, I think most of the BBK's were just doing a training run. If they were pushing like I was they'd have finished WAY before me! But, it's nice to think about :)

Twinkies, thanks! I always get scared wondering what I CAN do, I'm glad I held in for a 'smash'!

From RAD on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 21:20:18 from 67.172.229.125

Thanks Kelli! I'm glad the stupid TM really is harder than the road. I don't think I could ever do that on a TM!!!

From Walter on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 21:50:16 from 24.10.169.110

Great to see you down there and great post prego race!

From RAD on Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 23:08:38 from 67.172.229.125

Walter, it's been a while! It was good to see you too. Thanks, these legs will remember what speed is yet (which I'm sure makes you laugh, speed to my legs is recovery to yours!)

Toby, thanks! It hasn't been an easy road, but it's always worth it!

Cheryl, Thank you! I look up to you in SO many ways, I really appreciate your kudos!

From DonGardinero on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 00:21:46 from 67.2.103.82

No wonder you were looking at me like "who is this creepy guy talking to me?" LOL.

From Smooth on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 00:30:09 from 67.2.67.18

Rachel ~ You are AMAZING!!!! Seriously! You ran an awesome race! You have no idea what a great runner you are! I know how hard you worked too! CONGRATULATIONS on exceeding your goal and way to finish strong!

THANK YOU for always there to take care of me. I had so much fun hanging out with you before and after the race! Larry kept saying to me: "Rachel is such a NICE girl! She is so nice to you!"

And yes, I agree that your age group is a TOUGH one and you are right UP there with everyone of them! You just have to wait till you are as old as me then you will WIN at every race! I'm serious! :)

From Rossy on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 01:21:43 from 67.107.64.146

Impressive race Rach and sub-1:40 is just a matter of time! I like how you were so winded after the race that you were just shoving your watch in people's faces. Excellent effort and way to stay strong, it sounds like you really left everything on the road!

From Brent on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 07:52:11 from 168.178.30.219

Devine Miss M - 500 commando points for the effort. I would agree with your comments, look out at SL half.

From Lily on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 12:19:43 from 67.199.181.73

Well look at you now! You had a baby 7 months ago and your already doing so well. :) Can't wait to see what you do this year!

From RAD on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 14:15:44 from 67.172.229.125

Dale, I hope I wasn't THAT out of it! I just remember that in the middle of saying hello we got interrupted or something and then I turned back and you were gone.

Smooth, thanks! You are just a wonderful person yourself - how can anyone not be wonderful back? You get what you put out there in the world...some days I'm afraid of what is coming my way!! :) You are amazing, thanks for your support!!

Rossy, sometimes I wonder after a race (when you are all cooled down and collected) if I really left it all out there or if I had more in me. This race more than any other I do feel like I put it all out there! A nice downhill will help me out to push just a tad more though - My long legs like downhill!

Brent, it was great to see you for a moment after the race! You did a wonderful job, thanks for all your continued support and commando points!

Chad, Thanks :)

Julie, I loved watching you sneak up on stage for ALL your awards :) It was wonderful to chat a bit after the race! My sleeping baby streak has continued...but I'm trying not to jinx it.

Lily, Onward and upward - the only way to go! Now I can keep up with you on your easy days for a mile or two :)
