Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

This week is more like RADswimming and RADbiking :) So, since my calf wasn't too happy yesterday the last couple miles I decided to be nice. I haven't hit the pool like I should, but figured it was no big deal. So, since I had a free day and hubby home (we're jetting off for camping here quickly) I thought I'd go and swim.

I did some math a figured out the IM swim is 3.86KM or 4221.3 yds. Since all our pools are yd pools I needed to figure out how many yds I'd be swimming at the half IM in August....I wanted to do a timed test swim (no stopping!). So, 1/2 of 4221.3 is 2110.65, then it is easier for me to keep track in touches (25yds, not a full lap - just a length), so divide that by 25 and I got 84.4 'touches'. Ahhh, perfect. I'll do 85 and call it good.

I started out at the pool and the first 20 flew by. BUT, by 40 my goggles were hurting my head SO bad I had a headache and felt like my head was going to implode. I needed to fix them. In order to simulate my IM swim I didn't 'stop' time or swimming, but in the deep end I took my goggles off, and dog paddled to the other end (no touching the bottom! I'm in the middle of the lake :) ) - still moving. I did this back as well to give my head a little extra break, then got back at it.

Just before 60 they pulled the lap lanes. Crap, crap, crappy crap. I ended up stopping at 60 and having to walk over to the other side of the pool to swim the 'short' way. I asked the guard and he said it was 22yds not 25. poo. So, I watched time and it was one minute exactly before I got swimming again. As I swam I figured out I'd need to do 3 laps and 9 yds extra to make up for the shorter distance. Well, I had 1/2 a 'touch' I'd added on, so I could throw the 9yds into that 1/2 a touch and just add 3 more. Poo. 88 now instead of 85. I was getting tired.

My face and  hurt, my throat was dry (too much breathing out no water in) and I wanted to throw up. I was SO done. I just kept thinking of feeling like that in the middle of the lake with no where to stop...had to carry on. I did do one more goggle rest/dog paddle lap as well (around 70). Then, the last 8 touches I could finally see the light and I picked up speed to just get done! Best 300 EVER! :) When I finished I was at 45:30, so taking away the minute for the detour I did 44:30 - almost exactly the 45 min I'd predicted. Now, to move up from that!

Things I learned in the pool today - I need new goggles. Ones that don't hurt my head. Secondly, I need more endurance work in the pool. I can get through 1/2 the swim no problem, but around the 2/3rds mark I really struggle. The end is always better, because it is the end. But, I need to get more used to swimming without stopping and breaks.

Very wonderful, educational day in the pool. No running workout by any means, but a day when you learn and grow in any sport is a good day!

Oh, and as a side note...this half IM isn't going to be as 'easy' as I thought! People that complete full IMs....holy whoa, they are awesome!

Good swim. I'm taking your word for it on the math though.

FIRST OF ALL ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY OKAY??? your house??? do you need a place to stay??

Comment on your swim-- you had me confused. so what actually is an IM?? international marathon :D? just kidding. individual medley for my daughter who swims that event. now I don't even remember if a yard is longer than a meter or the other way around. My pool at PG outdoor is 25 meter pool. I hate all the touches. I love the 50 meter pool at AF. You will be faster in open water. And that time looks great to me, not sure what a half IM is equivalent too ? a mile +? hope everything is okay!!!

flat, another reason I'm not so into swimming...too much math!! :)

Julie, IM in this report refers to and IronMan. I am doing the half IM in August and the swim distance is like 1.2ish miles. I thought most pools were Meter pools, but they are typically yds not Meters, so if you've got a M pool hang onto it!! A LOT less math :) and a M is longer than a Yd, not by a lot...but over thousands it makes a big difference.

Oh, and yes we're good, as far as fire is concerned! We were in the evac zone, but were camping. We were leaving town and saw the first wiffs of smoke at 3:00ish. Luckily, it looks like they evaced us to keep people out of the emergency crew's way and not so much out of daner. By the time we got home this afternoon it seems mostly all cleared up! Other than the black hill you'd hardly know anything happened. Well, that and all the people displaced and who lost their property/homes. The firefighters worked really hard and got it out quickly!

Good to hear about the house. I don't even know you but was concerned. Gotta love the blog!

Devine Miss M - just swim, swim Forest swim, Hey - if you can make it down to the Oquirrh hills pool, the math is much easier, 17 laps equals 1.05 miles. Also, 50 meters, no as much counting. Nothing easy about Tris once you get beyond the sprint distance. Hey, there is a group workout, July 20th, open water swim Utah lake, riding the half bike course and then a run, let me know if you interested, the group workout is all on the course. We are doing the entire bike 56 miles, about a mile swim and running a few miles. I did the workout last year, it will give you better feeling on race day knowing you have done the course.

Good job taking it easy on running, you had a big race Sat! No need to push it and get injured! Great work with your 1/2 IM training, you arr going to do great!! The swimming will just keep getting easier especially with "simulation" trial runs like that! ;)

From RAD on Sun, Jul 01, 2012 at 22:48:46 from 98.202.23.178

Russ, thanks for the concern! I too love the blog for that kind of stuff :)

Brent, The July 20th practice run sounds EXCELLENT! I will do my best to convince hubby that he can work from home so that I can get out and do it. Better get all my housework done and start batting my eyes now :) We've got a 50M pool out here in Riverton too, but at 11:00AM I don't like to deal with the sun outside.

Brooke, I guess when you get old you learn to be nice to your body :) I'm working on the training, but after that swim know I've got a lot of work to do!
