Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Wow, what a crazy day! I started at the gym with a pissy attitude and all I wanted to do was sleep, so I decided to bag speed work Wednesday and just do x-training. There was a class "no limits cardio" that I figured I might as well jump in, because a group class usually motivates me more than going at it alone.

The class was really good and wouldn't ya know it - I get in there and the first thing the teacher has us do is running. really?!? uggghhh. Anyway, it ended up a nice mix of different things and it was a better cardio workout than any other class I've been to! So, I added a 1/2 mile of running, because we did at least 5 min of running total in the class.

I was feeling better after class and thought I'd hit just a few slow miles. Well, I got on the TM and decided to see how 8:34 felt in my legs. Hmmm, fine. So, I thought maybe I'd tackle the speed work after all. In RW it said a workout to see if you could hit 10K goal pace was 4-5 mile repeats at goal pace with 3:30 jog between them. So, I took it up to 7:13 to test things out. Well, after about 1/2 a mile I hit an epiphany. I took stock of what I was feeling: breathing, good under control and I can even sing (with my ipod) a bit under my breath as I run; legs, fine no aches pains or fatigue. So, then why are you going to stop at 1 mile to 'recover' you have no need to recover - you're fine! So, I just kept on keepin' on.... after 2 miles at that pace (and still just fine, almost felt effortless a bit) I decided to hit it up a notch and went a sub 7mm for the final mile. I finished the last .25 at a 6:30 pace and then I wanted to see if I could run at 10mph. A fun challenge! So, after I'd run 4 miles in 30 min (1 warm-up @ 8:34) I went to 6:00 and ran. I finished .10 at that speed, but I think I could've gone to a full quarter mile. I was done playing though and then went to cool down and finished to 4.5 miles at an 8:34. Total time on the run was 34:41 for 4.5 miles AP of 7:37 for the run.

I stretched and rolled my hamstring afterward (I felt it tighten up a bit on the cool down) and now I feel great. I'm still surprised that I ran that fast that long. I don't know if it was the 'warm-up' at class and pushing my cardio that helped me fall into a good rhythm on the TM or if I constantly just don't challenge myself enough and I need to take 'inventory' on my runs to see if I really need to increase the speed or not. Rather perplexed about this run honestly. I still think the TM's are just calibrated wrong :)

Nice and speedy running Rachel.

It's a good thing you had an epiphany or I would be chewing you out for such a long entry.

From RAD on Wed, Mar 16, 2011 at 18:16:27 from 67.172.229.125

Cal, thanks. I have yet to see any of this on the road - this is why I think the TM's are wrong.

Burt, long entry? hello? have you ever read my blog? This is a short one for me!

From Burt on Wed, Mar 16, 2011 at 18:45:18 from 206.19.214.144

But usually you run longer. I'm talking words per mile here.

WOW, what an awesome speed work out!!

I think you just need to show up at the gym "pissy" a little more often- it seems to work out in your favor.

Take some of that pissy with you to Painters and see if you can't leave that paint wet!

Burt, okay I understand now. I will try and run more miles for the next 'long' entry.

Carina, it's nice to feel some speed once in a while!

QP, I usually show up with a pissy attitude, doesn't always work :)

Allie, thanks - I could've almost kept up with you on one of your normal runs today...if I was going downhill and you were going up!

Merri, What?!? Allie reads someone else's blog? I think we should constantly run on poorly calibrated TM's to help simple confidence levels :)

Allie...who is this Mich?

From Smooth on Thu, Mar 17, 2011 at 13:32:02 from 67.2.103.237

WOW!!! Those are SPEEDEE miles! You will do awesome at Spectrum. I predict a PR!!!

From RAD on Thu, Mar 17, 2011 at 15:13:50 from 67.172.229.125

Brent, sorry missed your comment posting while you posted. I'm done now for the week in running miles. I'll do a bit of light cross tomorrow and I hope to get to the start line ready to rumble!

Smooth, I honestly couldn't believe it myself - especially since it was so easy. Again, the only explanation is bad TM's!
